No Leadership Change In LP, Supreme Court Didn’t Sack Me – Abure

Friday, 25 April 2025

The National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has made it clear that his position remains intact, contrary to claims suggesting he has been removed.

Addressing the media on Thursday through the party’s spokesperson, Obiora Ifoh, in Abuja, Abure said the Supreme Court ruling did not strip him of his role or invalidate his leadership.

He blamed internal actors with personal agendas for spreading false interpretations of the judgment, aimed at creating confusion within the party. According to him, the ruling only reaffirmed the legitimacy of the party’s National Convention held on March 27, 2024.

Abure highlighted that the Supreme Court recognized the autonomy of political parties to manage their internal affairs through their established structures, as long as they comply with their constitution.

He further called on Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and former presidential candidate Peter Obi to listen to the voice of reason and stop encouraging division within the party.

The Labour Party Chairman stressed that the convention followed all legal processes, including timely notifications to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in accordance with both the party’s constitution and the Electoral Act.

Quoting the Supreme Court, he said: “The internal affairs of a political party can be defined as matters, situation in which only the political party to the exclusion of others can make decisions… the Constitution of the Party must hold sway and be followed in all matters.”

Abure maintained that the party’s leadership structure remains valid and the judgment has only reinforced the principle that such matters are to be handled internally, not through the courts.
