Don’t Abandon PDP For Coalition Politics – Sowunmi Warns Atiku

Friday, 25 April 2025

Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar Presidential Campaign and a respected voice within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has cautioned the former Vice President against his recent push for an opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 election.

Known for his long-standing loyalty to Atiku, Sowunmi took a firm stand, urging him to reconsider the strategy which he believes could weaken the PDP’s foundation.

Sowunmi expressed concern that abandoning the PDP’s established platform in pursuit of an alliance with smaller political groups may further destabilize the party.

He argued that the energy being directed toward coalition talks would be better spent addressing the internal challenges facing the PDP and rebuilding the party from within.

The PDP chieftain questioned the authenticity of those rallying around Atiku in the proposed coalition, suggesting that many of them are not genuinely aligned with his vision and could pose risks to the party’s unity. Speaking to news men on Thursday he was quoted saying:

“You were given presidential ticket to PDP twice. You were made vice president of PDP twice. Come what may, whatever come back together, amalgamation or coalition that you’re doing, it has to be done in the PDP,” he advised.

Sowunmi also appealed for a return to loyalty, stressing that no leader should walk away from a platform that elevated them to national prominence.

He further called on Peter Obi to return to the PDP, saying his re-entry could significantly boost the party’s strength and appeal as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.
