“More Governors Will Join APC After Oborevwori’s Defection” – Ganduje

Tuesday, 29 April 2025

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has expressed confidence that more governors currently in opposition parties will soon defect to the ruling APC.

Ganduje made the statement on Monday during a special event in Asaba, Delta State, organized to officially welcome Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa into the APC.

Their move marks a major political shift in Delta State, ending almost three decades of dominance by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The arrival of Oborevwori and Okowa into the APC has significantly boosted the party’s strength, with Ganduje confirming that the APC now boasts 22 sitting governors nationwide. Handing the party flag to Oborevwori, Ganduje said,

“I must thank our 21 executive governors. Now, with this, we have the 22nd governor. Let me tell you, keep your ears and eyes open — more governors will soon join us.”

Meanwhile, former Governor Okowa provided insight into the decision to defect, describing it as a calculated move aimed at securing Delta State’s future.

He explained that the need to build a stronger relationship with the federal government was critical in order to access more developmental opportunities.

“When the news broke that we had decided to switch paths, many wondered why. But in every people’s history, there comes a time to make a strategic move for the common good. It wasn’t about me or the governor, but about ensuring Delta State has stronger access to the resources and goodwill available at the federal level,” Okowa said.

The Monday event was attended by several prominent figures, including Vice President Kashim Shettima, and marked a major turning point for APC’s influence in the South-South region.
