“Cut Your Beard First!” – Daddy Showkey Responds To Niger Governor’s Dreadlock Ban

Friday, 25 April 2025

Nigerian music veteran Daddy Showkey has condemned Governor Umar Bago of Niger State for instructing security personnel to arrest people with dreadlocks in Minna.

The governor issued the directive during a stakeholders’ security meeting on Tuesday, where he instructed officials to shave the dreadlocks of residents in Minna and impose fines.

However, on Wednesday, Bago explained that his order was specifically aimed at individuals linked to cult-related activities.

In response to the announcement on Thursday, Showkey took to his Instagram page to mock the governor, daring him to first trim his own beard.

The singer, famous for his trademark dreadlocks, also called off his planned visit to Niger State, citing the new regulation as a reason.

“Mohammed Umar Dada be your problem? I dey come to Minna but now that you have asked your security agents to cut off dreadlocks, so hold your state but make you cut your beer beer,” he wrote.

Showkey, whose full name is John Odafe Asiemo, hails from Olomoro Kingdom in the Isoko South local government area of Delta state.

He rose to fame in the 1990s with his unique musical style and the iconic ‘Galala’ dance moves. The singer had previously shared that he discovered his passion for singing while working at a motor park.
