Trump Open To Elon Musk Buying TikTok, Wants 50% Cut

Wednesday, 22 January 2025

United States President, Donald Trump has expressed willingness to allow Elon Musk or Larry Ellison to purchase TikTok, provided the government receives a 50% share of the proceeds.

Musk is the owner of Tesla and microblogging platform X, while Larry Ellison is co-founder of Oracle, a multinational technology corporation.

Trump’s statement comes after he signed an executive order delaying the enforcement of a federal ban on TikTok by 75 days.

The ban, which was imposed due to national security concerns over TikTok’s Chinese ownership, temporarily forced the app offline, affecting over 170 million US users.

Trump’s executive order allows TikTok to resume operations, but the company’s future in the US remains uncertain.

He warned China against interfering in the potential sale, threatening tariffs of up to 100% if they attempt to obstruct the deal.

When asked about Musk’s potential interest in buying TikTok, Trump, speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Tuesday, replied, “I would be, if he wanted to buy it. I’d like Larry to buy it, too.”

Trump also emphasized the value of a US permit for TikTok’s operations, stating, “TikTok is worthless if it doesn’t get a US permit. With a permit, it’s worth like a trillion dollars.

“So what I’m thinking about saying to somebody is ‘buy it and give half to the United States of America and we’ll give you a permit and you’ll have a great partner in the United States and they’ll have something that is more valuable because they have the ultimate partner in the United States.”

The President’s comments suggest that he is open to negotiating a deal that would allow TikTok to continue operating in the US, but only if the US government receives a significant share of the profits.
