‘The Ease With Which Arms, Ammunitions Are Acquired Is A Matter Of Serious Concern’

Saturday 31 January 2015

Isa-YugudaGovernor of Bauchi State, Malam Isa Yuguda, has expressed concern over the proliferation of small arms and light weapons across the country, saying the impunity in killing of innocent lives is becoming alarming.

The governor stated this on Thursday at a two-day stakeholders sensitisation forum on the proliferation of small arms and light weapons in Nigeria for the North-East zone titled, ‘Ballot Without Bullet’ held at the Zaranda Hotel, Bauchi.

The Presidential Committee on Small Arms and Light Weapons, inaugurated by President Goodluck Jonathan on April 23, 2013, is the front leader in Nigeria’s effort to stem the tide of illicit arms across the country.

Represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Alh. Mahmood Maijama’a, Gov. Yuguda said the state government was concerned with the ugly trend, whereby, arms were being smuggled into the country.

“The current security challenges in the northern part of the country call for a holistic and pragmatic approach to be addressed.

“The ease with which arms and ammunition are acquired and used to maim and kill innocent people is a matter of serious concern to the Bauchi State Government”, Yuguda noted.

The governor pointed out that there seemed to be a network in the smuggling of arms.

He added, “The proliferation and use of illicit small arms and light weapons by undesirable elements cut across the geo-political zones of the country.

“Indeed, there appears to be an underground network which facilitates the proliferation of these dangerous weapons”.
