5 behind-the-scenes moves that helped Nigeria turn the tide against Boko Haram

Posted on Saturday 28 February 2015 No comments

Saturday 28 February 2015

The victories recorded by the military in recent weeks over the dreaded militant sect, Boko Haram, has seen several towns and villages reclaimed in the North East region.

Great news indeed!

But something that a lot of people have not been talking about are the crucial steps that were taken by President Goodluck Jonathan in the buildup to the latest military offensive.

It seems that President Goodluck Jonathan’s characteristically quiet nature is a perfect foil for his smooth strategies and having the psychological upper hand in protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity.

Below are five crucial moves that have helped turn the tide:

1. Improved welfare and morale-boosting visit: There has been an improvement in welfare for the gallant and brave Nigerian soldiers waging the war. And recently did you see how their spirits received a further boost as the President and Commander-in-Chief visited military formations in Maiduguri and Baga. From the video below, this clearly worked.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaY3veJg7gs&app=desktop (WATCH)

2. Foreign diplomacy moves: From the later part of 2014, Jonathan embarked on crucial visits, prominent among which was the visit to some of the presidents of our neighbouring countries like Chad. These meetings were instrumental to the establishment of a multinational West African offensive. Mr. Adefuye, the Foreign Affairs minister also addressed the US parliament, slamming Washington for refusing to supply weapons and ammunition.

3. Consultations within the country – Jonathan has visited a number of stakeholders in the security sub-sector as well as thought leaders and traditional rulers from the North. Those visits smoothened the way for the current operations.

4. Reinforcing the military with equipment: Military equipment was procured by pivoting away from break in relations with traditional partners like the United States to China, Russia and Belarus.

5. Timing is everything: The military had said since December 2014 that it would begin a big offensive against the terrorists in February. It has stuck to that schedule and now producing results.

What Catholic Bishops discussed with Buhari on 2015 elections – Kaigama, CBCN President

Posted on No comments

Buhari N catholic fathers

Kaigama

President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), Archbishop Ignatius Kaigama, has opened up on the forthcoming general elections, saying that what the CBCN is concerned about is that things are done peacefully.

Kaigama, who spoke with AIDOGHIE PAULINUS in Abuja, also said the CBCN “would want to see a healthy competition, that the best, in terms of leaders, emerge to lead us, and would want to see that the social conditions of Nigerians improve and that Nigerians are happy, are free to relate in a spirit of friendship and fraternity with one another.”

He spoke on these and other issues.

Excerpts…

How has the conference been so far?

We thank God. Things have been moving well. It is a very interesting conference. The bishops are all here, the Catholic Bishops, and we are concerned about the progress of our Church, the growth of the faith and we are also concerned about the welfare and the progress of the nation. So, we are combining these two aspects, to pray, to discuss and to see the way forward.

What actually did you discuss about the Church?

This time, our focus is the ‘Family’ and the theme of our conference is ‘Good Families Make Good Nations.’ By implication, if we have good families in Nigeria who are faithful to good moral values and are God fearing, they are good citizens and do what is right, we are certainly going to have a good nation. And it is our desire to animate all families. Not just Christian families, but all families to see the positive role the family can play in the transformation of this nation. And they are the first teachers of good values. Whether it is spiritual or social value, the family is the first place. Therefore, we should look at it more seriously and take the duties of the families very, very seriously – the father, the mother, the children; all form a very powerful unit of the society and we believe that through them, we can bring very great changes and transformation in our society.

This is an election year. What did you discuss on the state of the nation, vis-a-vis the forthcoming elections?

We know that the elections are around the corner, the dates have been changed and all that. But we take things as they come. All that we are concerned about is that things are done peacefully. We want to see a healthy competition; we want to see that the best, in terms of leaders, emerge to lead us; and we want to see that the social conditions of Nigerians improve and that we are happy, we are free to relate in a spirit of friendship and fraternity with one another. This is what we wish for Nigeria. The unnecessary political controversy and unhealthy competition are not going to help us at all. We have been doing our best to encourage people, to educate people to see that this is not a do-or-die affair. The struggle for political position should not becloud our reasoning and we should do everything to put into correct perspective, the good moral values, social values and other values that would help to propel Nigeria to greater heights. This is our prayer. Let’s get good leaders who provide good governance and the benefits of democracy will reach the nook and crannies of the nation and every Nigerian will feel the positive impact of democracy.

Is the CBCN not worried about the poll shit and the insinuation that the elections may not even hold?

Initially, everyone was wondering why the shift, but with hindsight now, you can see that there are good reasons to have allowed the shift because things are presently done with a better spirit I can say. Before the changes in the dates for the elections, it was such paranoia, a kind of apprehension in the air. You could feel palpable fear, anxiety, and people running helter-skelter, relocating to their hometowns because of fear of what could erupt during the elections. So, the shift was somehow a blessing in disguise namely: it cools down political tempers and people are now reflecting with more calmness and rationally assessing the situation.

We, as bishops, could see. We were able to interact with more people, for instance, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC). We were able to interact with him and had useful discussions about our country, Nigeria, and the different issues that affect the citizens of this country. And you can see that we were able to pray along with the President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and we could hear from him and he could hear from us. So, these are all the positive aspects of the change of dates and I am told that more people have acquired their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) and hopefully, there is a better spirit and we shall have a very good, peaceful and very orderly elections.

Do you nurse any fear about the elections, most importantly, the presidential election?

There is always the aspect of worry and concern if people don’t do their homework. If the security agencies do what they should do correctly, honestly and with the fear of God, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) chairman and his commissioners, including other officials are honest and do exactly what they were put there to do and there is a common platform, equal for everybody to contest election and we are not being pressurized by any group or any person, definitely, the elections will be done and people will accept the results. But when there are perceived injustice and the use of undue advantages over others and so on, you trigger a lot of crisis and that is what we don’t want to see or have.

The meeting between you and the APC presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari recently which you called ‘Episcopal Town Hall Conversation with Representatives of the CBCN,’ at whose instance did the meeting hold?

The presidential candidate of the APC asked to have a meeting with us. And we are good Nigerians, we are Catholic Bishops and he is also a good Nigerian. So, we say well, let Nigerians who are good and mean well for Nigeria meet. We gave a date that was convenient for us because we were meeting in Abuja. Not all the bishops, but a representative. That is, the administrative board of the Bishops’ Conference was meeting in Abuja and we asked them to come and see us and he came with his team. We had a very useful interaction, civilized interaction, friendly and charitable. That is the way it should be between Nigerians and not to be afraid because of religious, political or ethnic differences.

Apart from what we read in the media, what were the behind-the-scene discussions with Buhari?

There was no discussion in secret. We were very frank and I think the discussions were very cordial. We asked questions and he answered. We raised issues of security, issues of corruption and issues of the high tension that we are experiencing on account of the elections and so on, and what he will do to make a difference if he becomes the president. We prayed that God’s will may be done.

We are not campaigning or working for any particular political party or candidate. We mean well for every candidate or political party. Let them present their manifestos, let them sell what they have to Nigerians and Nigerians are people of wisdom. They will know who has something to offer and when it comes to voting, they will do the right thing. Ours is to educate them and conscientize them, which we are doing very effectively.

Buhari had during the meeting said he had no personal religious agenda and he would not support any move by anybody or group of persons to either Christianize or Islamize Nigeria. Do you believe him?

I don’t have to doubt somebody of that status who is meeting a number of bishops and archbishops who represent a very significant segment of the society in Nigeria. I don’t have to doubt him at all. If he is able to articulate these before us and do so, I think it will be unfair to begin to nurse a kind of doubt. I believe him when he says exactly what he said.

At the meeting, you expressed regret over the wide communication that exists between the leaders and the people, while also hoping that the conversation was an indication of the willingness to establish a sustainable communication platform. It was also reported that in a series of boisterous exchanges, the CBCN variously expressed concern with the falling education standards in Nigeria, widespread corruption, violence in the polity, insurgency and the worrisome security situation in the country, amongst others. Does that mean that the CBCN is not happy with the way and manner the Jonathan’s administration has been going so far?

That would be a very negative way of reading the exchange that we had. Even if Jonathan was sitting here, we will be saying more or less, the same thing. And remember, we have had meetings with Jonathan at different occasions and we have been able, even in private, to tell him what we feel about the situation in the country. Not long ago, we had meeting over security issues with him in the Aso Villa. And again, some few weeks ago, we met and we still kept talking about how to make things better, how to improve and create harmonious relationship amongst Nigerians and that there should be unity and that Nigerians should feel safe and they should be well provided for in all forms of life whether educationally, materially and otherwise. So, talking about improving Nigeria is not tantamount to an indictment on the government in power. For God’s sake, things could always be done better. Even if you give President Jonathan a second chance to rule this country, if he succeeds to win election, I am sure he will like to do things better and do it in a way that Nigerians will be happier. This is all we were trying to tell the APC candidate that if you want to rule Nigeria, these are the issues you must consider seriously. And if President Jonathan is here listening to us, we are going to say the same thing: improve on this, do better. And whoever God gives power to, we are ready to assure our total loyalty and dedication and collaboration and we shall work for the progress of our nation.

After the meeting, some thought the Catholic Bishops we know not to be partisan, may have endorsed Buhari. What is your take on this?

That is unfortunate because we lack that political maturity. In a civilized conduct, you are ready to engage anybody who requests for your attention. That is exactly what we are doing. But because people are politically immature in this country and see democracy in a different context, they misread everything. Nowadays, if you cough, they are going to interpret that cough as something. If somebody sees you with a broom today, they will think you are this. If somebody sees you protecting yourself with an umbrella, then you are that. In that case, there is just no way out. So, whatever the Bishops do at this point, it is going to be misinterpreted politically. But that is not an issue to us. We do what we feel is right. We meet the people we think we have the freedom to interact with and we discuss issues that are for the common good of Nigerians.

There was an allegation recently by Rivers State governor, Rotimi Amaechi, that some pastors were given over N6 billion to campaign for the president. After a confirmation from a pastor in Borno, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) reacted to the issue. What is your take on this?

It is one of the sad aspects of our political development. Why must politics be tied to money? Why should we spend so much money? If at all there is money, it should go to the poor people; it should go to people who are in distress. Right now, we have many Internally Displaced People (IDPs) and if there is that kind of money in Nigeria and we throw it around just because we want to be elected, I don’t want to believe it. Nobody has told me that they received money of such magnitude from anybody. I am part of CAN and CAN has not told me. We are a very important aspect of CAN, the Catholic group. So, if they have received such money, we are yet to be told and I don’t believe that they will just throw money around just because they want election. If we know, then we know how to react appropriately.

Were there also moves to approach the Bishops?

About what?

About the election?

Nigerians know our stand as Catholic Bishops. Our law as Catholics does not permit partisan politics. Priests and bishops are not to engage in partisan politics.

If you discover that a group of priests or bishops collected money from politicians, what will you do?

It is immoral in the first place to collect money. For what? What work have you done? You need to earn the money you get. But if somebody, for no just cause, comes and throws money around just because he wants election and you collect it, there is something wrong with the person collecting and the person giving because they don’t mean well for this country. Let us be guided by merit that somebody qualifies, somebody has the ability, the capacity to give something to Nigeria in a selfless manner.

I cited the example of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference, our leadership style. I am the President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria for the past three years. I don’t have any official housing, I don’t have official cars, I don’t have personal assistants. When I travel, I go on economy class, so there is nothing special. I am always giving. When I travel, I use the money from the Archdiocese of Jos to travel on behalf of the Bishops, and to work on behalf of the Bishops. So, it is not about acquiring. It is about giving. Leadership is about self-giving and when you give selflessly, you will find that the people are happy and they would want you to be there. You don’t have to even spend one kobo campaigning because they know that your job is to give and give and not to take. Unfortunately, our politics is about taking. Taking and grabbing and misusing the resources recklessly and that is why everybody is in a feverish competition to get there.

Do you see the Nigeria of our dream becoming a reality soon?

I am a chronic optimist and I believe all will be well with Nigeria. Despite all the speculations, unhealthy prophecies about the destabilization of Nigeria and all that, I don’t believe they would come to pass. Nigerians are a very unique kind of people. Yes, we have our problems, we have our challenges that could be very, very serious, but we are able to overcome them with such resilience that marvels you. So, I am so optimistic that Nigerians, despite all the challenges we are facing, religious challenges, political challenges, security challenges, we are going to overcome and Nigeria will be back, healthy, strong and ready to go.

Terry G Opens Up On His Marriage, Personal Brand And Crazy Lifestyle

Posted on No comments

ter

Terry G is known for his very loud songs and eccentric dance moves, even though he claims he’s nothing like that in real life.

In a recent chat with Punch, Terry G opened up on his marriage life, career and why he doesn’t get endorsement deal due to his personal brand.

Read excerpts below: –

On his marriage life

“It will happen very soon but it takes planning and much more. Ironically, I am facing a lot of pressure regarding marriage but it is not from either of our families. The pressure is from outsiders. I want to work hard and be stable. I want to work to the extent that I would not rely on music because I do music for fun. Everybody knows that she lives with me and I am already living like a married man.”

Why he like being controversial

“It is what sells. I am not the rave-of –the –moment artiste but I am still very relevant in the industry and it is because I am controversial. I love the controversy. I like making people talk.”

On if he agree that he have calmed down since he had a kid

“Yes it is true. Anybody that has a child must calm down, it is a general thing. Once you have a child, you must become a responsible man. That is when people would know that the madness is deliberate and it is just being done to make money. My son is a British citizen and he is going back to school in London in March. This is to show people that I know what I am doing. The craziness is what puts food on my table and money in my bank accounts. There are people that support and love it.”

On why he removed studs from his face

“I stopped because I already set the pace and everybody is piercing now. I will still do something that they will follow.”

The most expensive fashion item he own

“It is my jewellery but I cannot say the amount I bought it for security reasons. They are investments and even my earring is gold.”

The kind of clothes he feel most comfortable in

“I love looking hip-hop. Dressing is a style and there are so many reasons I am not on a billboard. I will not cut my hair for any reason neither would I change my brand. I cannot lose this image because of my fans and I love them so much.”

On why he loves wearing bright coloured clothes

“I like flashy colours because of the kind of shoes I wear. I like blue, red, and green. I like colours a lot but I do not like pink. I believe pink and purple are colours for homosexuals”

The fashion item he can’t leave home without

“That would be my jewellery. They call me Mr. Bling Bling, I started it.”

The biggest fashion mistake he have made

“There was a time I put different colours on my hair at once. My hair was multi-coloured and I looked like a masquerade. It had yellow, green and red. That was a big fashion regret but I just wanted people to talk about my brand. I just started out back then.”

Since you portray craziness with your brand, can you do that hairstyle again?

“Never, God forbids.”

Mikel is a failure –Henry Nwosu

Posted on No comments

mikel-obi

BY HENRY OKODUWA

He says there’s more to the number 10 jersey than just wearing it. As a player who dazzled in the same role in his days with the national team, the Super Eagles, Henry Nwosu (MON) is most competent to speak on what wearing the No 10 jersey means. In a most candid manner, the ex – Eagles captain says Chelsea star, John Obi Mikel has failed as the Eagles No. 10.. He also speaks on his coaching career, and a host of other issues relating to football development in Nigeria. Excerpts.

How would you describe your journey so far as a coach?

I must tell you, it has been quite hectic. I have had some good and bad times but it has been fun all the way. I should say its different experience from active footballing. In coaching, the buck stops on your desk as what you do or fail to do affects the fortune of a team. If the results matches the effort you put in, you are commended by your employers, while you are kicked out like trash when things don’t go right. Nobody wants to know whether the working conditions were right or not. In this part where football is still largely tied to the apron – strings of government, it is more challenging. However, like I said, we have always tried to contribute our quota to the development of the game each time we have been given the opportunity.

You were recently reported to have parted ways with the Gateway FC of Abeokuta, what happened?

Yes, I was with the Gateway FC of Abeokuta as head coach throughout last season. But I had to leave the club after my one – year contract expired. I had expected a review and probably extension of the deal but a marked unwillingness of the club’s management to discuss terms forced me out. This is contrary to reports of non – performance being peddled by some mischief makers. Sir, what do you miss most about the African Cup of Nations?

I missed the Super Eagles. Infact, everyone who is keen watcher of African football did. But we have ourselves to blame for being careless and eventually failing to make it to the biennial tournament. I should say the protracted infighting in the rank of the NFF played a pivotal role in this impasse. Some people, rather than appreciate this fact, have been blaming coach Stephen Keshi alone for the failure. Even though I concede that as coach he is culpable in some areas, he alone must not be sacrificed for the Eagles inability to make it to Equitorial Guinea 2015.

But the argument is that Nigeria’s football cannot be branded a failure all because the Super Eagles failed to make it to the Nations Cup? Do you agree?

Well, you could say that if you consider that we would be quite busy on the continental and on the world stage with other teams like the Super Falcons who would be campaigning in the FIFA / Women’s World Cup in Canada, the Flying Eagles in both the AYC and WYC, the Golden Eaglets in both the African U – 17 Championships and hopefully FIFA U – 17 World Cup and the Samson Siasia – led U – 23 Eagles which begin their campaign for both the All – African Games and Rio 2016 Olympics. With all these to look forward to, it is easy for one to be consoled. However, imagine what it would have been if our biggest brand, the Super Eagles had gone to at least defend their crown in Equitorial Guinea. Good as action from the women and age – grade teams may be, the Super Eagles remains our favourite team. Who knows, we just could have won the title again to start the year on a most memorable footing. It was really a miss, I must tell you!

Sir, there’s been this debate recently that there’s not enough player quality in the present Eagles compare to the ones you played in, for instance. Do you share this opinion?

Yes, I agree totally with those who say that the present Super Eagles lack players with the essential quality to come to the party when the team is in dire straits. What we have are average players who strength lies only in unit and not individual class. That is why when that unity is affected in any way through dressing room disharmony, they come unstuck. In our days, we had players who can do something extra – ordinary in a bid to rescue their team from imminent defeat. I was one of such players. The late Muda Lawal was another. Segun Odebgami was also another. So was Adokie Amiesaemaka, the late Aloysius Atuegbu, Humphrery Edobor, Friday Elahor etc to mention but a few. Then, we valued donning the country’s green and white jerseys over and above monetary gains. Yes, money is good but the inordinate pursuit of it has somewhat killed the flair and enterprise of our players. The result is that we no longer see players who can dare, torment and break down defences of opponents, for instance, who decide to pack the bus. These days you see an Eagles team huffing and puffing to wins over opponents once regarded as whipping boys on the continent. These days you see and Eagle team without a leader, a motivator. In our days, you either had a Christian Chukwu commanding the team from the rear. In later years you either had a Stephen Keshi or a Peter Rufai, a Sunday Oliseh or an Nwankwo Kanu. Now, just look at the present team, apart from a Vincent Enyeama doing a yeo man’s job from the back, we don’t have any player to fill that role. Then, you also look at the level of commitment. Our players go into a match with the mindset of “we win, good, if we don’t, no big deal.” It is most unfortunate that our players go into important games with this attitude. Now, can you compare the team’s level of commitment when they played a – mission – impossible Nations Cup qualifying game against Congo in Brazaville to the one exhibited when they encountered South Africa in their last game in Uyo? There was a marked difference. For the future, we must build a team with determination, zeal, courage and commitment. Otherwise, we‘d continue to experience the heartbreaks of not qualifying for the Nations Cup every two years.

Talking about your playing days. The Eagles have had a tradition of great players wearing the No 10 jersey for Nigeria. A large number of football fans believe John Obi Mikel has so far not justified wearing the shirt in the present era. What’s your take?

Let me use this opportunity to make this clear. Mikel is and has never been a Number 10 player. So, I am miffed to continually see him wearing the number and pretending to do the job the shirt confers on him in the Eagles. To me, Mikel has not shown the stuff of a Number 10 player.

What’s the stuff of a Number 10 player?

A Number 10 player is one who can conjure the magic to rescue a team when the chips are down in a tight game when chances are supposedly at a premium. A Number 10 player is one who does something extra with flair, skill and vision to give his team the edge in a game. A Number 10 player if necessary, must carry the team on his shoulders as they seek result on the field of play. A Number 10 is the one who marshals the midfield, he is like troops to victory in a battle. He is visible, energetic and ever – present. He is not anonymous, he can’t afford to give less than 100% especially in a high – stakes, competitive encounter. And some times, a Number 10 must be a little bit flamboyant. He should be able to entertain the crowd once in a while. You will agree with me that these qualities are missing in Mikel. He’s neither a full- fledged attacking midfielder nor a defensive midfielder. He’s just there. Well, I do agree that sometimes jersey numbers these days don’t necessarily justify the role one plays in a team as even some defenders have been known to wear the Number 10. However, strictly in its actual sense, Mikel is not a Number 10 player.

Is there therefore any need to get one for the team then?

The need for a proper No 10 player for the Super Eagles cannot be over – emphasized. I am not the team’s handler but I do know a few players coming through the ranks who can develop and eventually fill this yawning vacuum in the team. One of such players is the fast – rising Kelechi Iheanacho.

But he was said to be too young to break into the Eagles squad?

Young, yes. But not too young. All Iheanachco needs is another two years maybe and he’d be ready for the Eagles. I see him taking over from Mikel sooner than even envisaged.

Reports have it that you have not been happy about your Silver – winning Dream Team of Beijing 2008 were treated?

Yes, it isn’t a hidden fact that I have repeatedly registered my displeasure with the authorities for failing to honour the Dream Team to the Beijing 2008 Olympics despite winning the only medal for Nigeria in that Games. I was assistant coach to coach Samson Siasia who led the team and knowing the odds we conquered to reach the finals, I felt it unfair for us not to be honoured. Although we were told that due to the illness of the late President Yar’ Adua, our reception at the Aso Rock Villa was postponed, I expected that his vice, Dr Gooduck Jonathan who succeeded him as President should have finished the task which his boss could not by officially honouring the team. Since government is a continuum, we expect the present administration of Dr Jonathan to toe the path of integrity by calling our team, even if belatedly, to a reception. We did the country proud at that Olympics and we should be appreciated for it, at least.

EPL WEEK 27 SHOWDOWN: Arsenal ambushes Everton at Emirates

United fired up for Black Cats’ visit to Old Trafford

BY MONICA IHEAKAM

Attention once again returns to the English Premier League this weekend after the explosive encounters of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 matches were concluded on Wednesday.

On Sunday March 1, 2015, Arsene Wenger will bank on consistency as Arsenal plays host to Everton at the Emirates Stadium.

With 12 matches to go until the end of the season, Wenger believes consistency will play a key role in the race for Champions League qualification.

Head to Head , the battle is tough for both Arsenal and their visitors having played against each other six times, recording 4 draws and a win each.

Like their famous supporter Mo Farah, Arsenal have become experts in recent seasons at knowing when to make their move. While fans would much rather see their team challenging for the title on a more consistent basis, 16 consecutive years in the Champions League is a fine achievement. Even when the situation looks bleak, Wenger somehow manages to guide his team into the top four.

What’s more, Wenger now has an almost fully fit squad to select from. Mesut Ozil has looked revitalised following his layoff, while England internationals Theo Walcott and Jack Wilshere are getting closer to match fitness. French striker Olivier Giroud is also producing his best form since arriving in England, having scored four goals in his last five outings.

Wenger, recently commented: “It’s the first time that there’s many more teams involved in the top four.”

Meanwhile, Manchester United’s herculean task today at Old Trafford is to subdue Sunderland at home to get back into their winning ways .

A 2-1 defeat to Swan City last week saw the Red Devils drop to the fourth position in the Premier League table as battle for Champions league places intensifies.

The loss at South Wales was United’s second in 16 league outings, a result that dampened their hopes of top four placement with just four points separating the teams in third and seventh spots,

Picking up maximum points in every game is now more vital than ever and with Arsene Wenger’s side not in action until sunday , United can reclaim their third win over Sunderland, after their 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture at the Stadium of Light back in August.

Last season, Sunderland recorded their first win away at old Trafford since 1968.

The Black Cats’ on their part are backed by another sell out away crowd, but have some fired up stars standing in their way of three away points.

In his personal online blog, Spanish star Juan Mata urged Louis van Gaal’s side to bounce back against Sunderland.

He said: “As you can imagine, especially those who read this blog week after week, this is one of those days when writing is a bit complicated, following a tough defeat.

Late show from Borussia Dortmund’s Marco Reus, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang inspired a 3-1 win over Schalke 04 in the Ruhr Derby on Saturday.

Aubameyang and Reus opted for Batman and Robin props in celebrating the formers after combining to break the deadlock in the 78th minute.

Hardworking midfielder Mkhitaryan slid in at the back post to double the Westfallians’ lead a minute later before Reus chased down and disposed teenage goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther to prod the ball into the net.

Brilliance meets perfection in ‘Maybe Tomorrow’

BY ONAOLATOMIRIN FALADE

For many denizens of the theatre, Terra Kulture has become the regular Sunday habitué where weekly entertainment of theatre is inevitable. On the last Sunday in the month of January, Eclectique Theatre, in conjunction with Terra Kulture, brought to the stage Maybe Tomorrow, an intense play written by Soji Cole and directed by the quietly confident and artistic maestro, Ibukun Fasunhan, also the artistic director and producer of Eclectique Theatre.

Maybe Tomorrow ordinarily wouldn’t have been one of my favourites due to the limited dramatis personae by the playwright. However, seeing it alive on stage and listening to the expertly crafted lines of the characters won me over.

When brilliance meets perfection, it finds expression in spectacular display of legerdemain and adroitness. The play revolves around two long lost friends, who fought side by side during the Nigeria Civil War. One would expect that such a meeting will be a joyful reunion replete with reminiscences. It is only a little of that, and much more. The first hindrance to their joy is the fact their meeting takes place in a police questioning facility where the two friends are on two different sides of the law.

Kenneth Uphopho, creative director at PAWS, plays the role of the chief interrogating officer, Adolphus Wariboko; while Patrick Diabuh, a leading stage artiste in Nigeria, with an unrepentantly charming stage persona, plays the role of Kenule Ododo the suspect.

These two friends are similarly different in their thinking, and the audience is led on a give-and-take kind of theatre where the speech flow is rich and uninterrupted. The interrogation process not only reveals bits and pieces of the suspect’s character, but opens the interrogating officer to more scrutiny.

Two comic police officers constantly burst into the interrogating room in the hope of getting some information and proving they are part of the interrogatory process. The two manage to create some sort of comic relief for the otherwise serious dramatization.

The play touches on the sensitive topic of patriotism, corruption, extra-judicial killings, kidnappings, unlawful and underage enlistment in guerilla camps and nationhood politics that eat deep into the system of today’s Nigeria. As the plot thickens, some ugly details of the mercilessness of war are revealed, and we begin to wonder who truly is conducting the interrogation and who the interrogated is.

At the end of the day, it is revealed that Kenule Ododo really knows nothing of the kidnapping of some expatriates who went missing. It, however, does not prove his total innocence in all issues; just for the one he was apprehended for. This reveals a huge chasm in the nation’s law enforcement system.

Maybe Tomorrow speaks of Nigeria’s hazardous past, the dicey present and an almost unrealistic future. No one truly knows tomorrow, but everyone hopes for a better tomorrow. Indeed, better times will come: Maybe Tomorrow.

Ujah ‘Proud’ Scoring Past World Best Goalkeeper Neuer

Posted on No comments

FC Cologne striker Anthony Ujah says “it is a great feeling” scoring against FC Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The Nigeria international was a pain in Bayern defenders’ neck during Friday night’s 4-1 defeat at the Allianz Arena and, even got on the scoresheet; a feat only a handful of players have managed to achieve this season.

“Scoring against Manuel Neuer is something any striker would be proud of at the moment, and I’m very proud of it and I hope it will give me confidence to continue helping my team to stay in the league,” Ujah told bundesliga.com. “It was a really, really, really proud moment that I will cherish for the rest of my life.”

The 24-year-old has scored 8 out of Cologne’s 21 goals this season as the ‘Billy Goats’ aim to avoid the drop and presently sits three points above the relegation play-off zone.

His deft footwork and unpredictability in front of joyous Bayern fans, celebrating the Bundesliga champions’ 115th founding anniversary, at the south terrace, kept the likes of Jerome Boateng, Holger Badstuber and homeboy Schweinsteiger on their guard.

And he managed to dull the Bavarians’ party shortly before the break when he headed in at the far post from an inch-perfect Matthias Lehman delivery from the right.

Ujah almost restored parity after the break, but Neuer dived to his left to save his goalwards effort following a quick counter-attack.

“I thought it was almost in, but he showed why he’s the best and I should be proud of being there at the right moment because that’s one of the things I’m trying to work on to improve,” he noted.

“I know it didn’t go in, but it’s something I can build on and continue to fight.”

Attention now shifts to the DFB Cup round of 16 on Tuesday, as Ujah hopes to add to his two goals at SC Freiburg’s Dreisamstadion.

“There have been surprises right from the first round so we will go there and try to go through to the next round,” he said.

“The cup is very important to our fans and we want to give them something to cheer about.”

Heroes’ reality show set to preserve Nigerian languages

■ Happiness Udodang wins maiden edition

BY OLAMIDE BABATUNDE

An exciting expository maiden edition of the first Nigerian television reality show with a mission to reawaken the interest and unleash the potentials of tourism abundant in the country has ended with Happiness Udodang emerging the ultimate winner.

Heroes: Back to the Roots reality show set out to house 37 contestants picked from all states, including the Federal Capital Territory, laden with culture-based task as they co-habited for 60 days.

The concept is the brain child of Chinyere Ogbukagu, Head, Havilah Timeless Production, based in Jos, Plateau State. In a bid to pick up the gradual loss and fizzling passion for the cultural heritage and values pertinent to Nigeria’s socio economic development and global outlook, especially among the youth, she deemed it fit to use the tube as the appropriate channel, working with Ifeanyi Onyeabor (Big Slim), an erstwhile Nollywood director.

Beyond showcasing the strength in diversity in culture, which Nigeria is blessed with, the show spotlighted various tourism potential yet to be harnessed in various states the cast and crew visited. Alhaji Hassan Aliu, tourism officer, Ministry of Tourism and Culture, Niger state, added that logistics were provided, and the house mates visited the first bridge in Niger state and other notable tourist sites.

The aim of the show is also to preserve the Nigerian languages from becoming extinct. While interacting with the media, Technical Director, Ifeanyi, said: “We want our youth to speak at least other Nigerian languages besides their own mother tongue. We also hope to take the show further across Africa, where we can imbibe other culture. Our culture is our strength and we must be able to preserve it.”

The 37 contestants traversed Kaduna and Plateau states before moving to the camp in Niger State, where they spent 60 days under close observation and performed all the various tasks expected of them.

Ultimate winner, Happiness Udodang, described her experience thus: “It has been awesome and great, and I thank God for making me a winner. This is the kind of show we need in Nigeria, because we have many things to project. Our Culture is our pride, identity and root. A man without culture is a man without his roots. I see people going to have their weddings outside Nigeria, a country with many beautiful places around. Some people also favour wearing western attires over our colourful Ankara fabric. These are things we need to watch, because it’s not helping us as a people. We need to realize who we are, speak one voice and brandish our diversity against intolerance and disunity.”

The end of the 2014 show culminated in an event of honour to recognize individuals and institutions that contributed to a better understanding of cultural legacies in Nigeria, with great emphasis on tolerance. Governor Babangida Aliyu came up as Best Supporting Governor, Cross River State as the cleanest, Niger State as the Most Culture Friendly State, while the Best Governor was Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom.

A nationwide audition for the second edition will begin in March, 2015. According to Chinyere, it is a show for everybody and a better way to preach unity and love.

I Have Been Offered ‘a Slave Contract,’ Says Keshi

Posted on No comments

Coach Stephen Keshi has expressed dissatisfaction with a new offer tabled by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which he described as a slave contract.

The 53-year-old has yet to reach an agreement with the NFF on a new deal since the end of his initial three-year contract at the 2014 Fifa World Cup in Brazil, where he led the Super Eagles to the round of 16.

Keshi said he has received his new contract from the NFF but has been far from impressed.

“From the clauses I have seen so far, I don’t know what words to use but the contract can be described as a ‘slave contract,” quipped Keshi.

Informationng.com understands that the NFF had planned to inscribe stringent clauses, such as making the ex-Togo and Mali coach answerable to several persons and committees, in his new contract.

It was learnt that Keshi has now been offered a two-year contract effective from March 1, 2015 with him to meet several targets or else the deal was off.

He should guide the country to the semi-finals of the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and also the last four of the next Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) or the contract will be terminated at his employers’ “absolute discretion.”

He is also required to sign a code of conduct.

Keshi himself revealed that he will be paid five million Naira (less than $25,000), same as he also received during his initial three-year contract.

This week, the ‘Big Boss’ lost out in the race to become the new head coach of Burkina Faso following the appointment of ex-Gabon and Niger handler Gernot Rohr.

Lagos writers: Struck by Cupid

Posted on No comments

BY OLAMIDE BABATUNDE

With this year’s reading coinciding with Valentine’s Day and the birthday of the acclaimed prolific writer, Professor Akachi Adimora Ezeigbo, the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA), Lagos, decided to celebrate the NLNG award-winner and also hold an intellectual discourse on the love life of writers, drawing from the well of her experiences and other guests.

The event was graced by Dr Tolu Ajayi, Tunji Shotimirin, Ifeoma Enahoro, Olalekan Adewusi, art critics and writers, who spoke at length about their various experiences in writing and its challenges on marriage.

According to Professor Ezeigbo, “Love is not only for our spouses, but for God, our children and neighbours, and for us to know love is what makes the world go round. If you have someone who loves you, it makes it easy to bear the hard times. We should learn to live in peace with one another, even our neighbours –as the Bible says, seek peace and pursue it.”

She also spoke about love for the country reflecting on the general elections that was postponed. She opined that it was in the best interest of the country, because it would help INEC get their act together properly and ensure people get their PVCs. The professor noted how politicians seemed too desperate with their propaganda, a sort of thing typical of the Nigerian politics.

Having been married for over 30 years, she threw light on how female writers could make their marriage successful, despite their busy schedules. She advised female writers to marry someone who understands and is sympathetic to them.

She said: “Women need to carry their spouses along, and men should not see writing as a terrible thing. I had and still have a very supportive husband, and he reads anything I write without objection, except for once when I wrote a very expressive piece about lovemaking, after reading it, he said, “No, this is pornography.” But I know of women, who have talked about their husbands burning their scripts”.

While relating her experience as a writer and journalist, Mrs Ifeoma Enahoro, another guest, said: “A writer is a crazy person, and that’s what makes it easy to write above the norm. I must say it’s not easy sharing a home with a writer, because you have a deadline you need to wake up early, and this means your husband wakes up and discovers you are not by his side. The thing is to talk to yourself and tell yourself when to draw the lines, because you still need to preserve your marriage unless you are not ready to keep it”.

For Dr Tolu Ajayi, love is a temporary thing, and what really matters is compatibility, which makes a writer’s marriage endure. He said: “Success is also imperative; when a writer is successful, the wife will be happy. Every writer should have some other source of income because of the economic reality of our society.” He recalled his school days when he was a science student yet had a flair for writing: “Many times I was told that I could be a writer and a doctor and so it turned out. The attitude of writers matters a lot and, when success comes, they need to know how to handle it.”

After a poem, “Condom Boom” was read from the collection, Dancing Masks, the discourse shifted from love to writing for children. Professor Ezeigbo had more to share with the guests. According to her, the age and language use are factors to be considered. Writing for children between the ages of 7-9 would require illustrations and use of dialogue with the aim of teaching them something. “Some people write adult books, and they say it’s for children. This should not be so, because children want to read about someone like them –someone they can look up to,” she stressed. This, she said, can be achieved if the writer uses a child as the protagonist in the work.

She enlightened young writers who might want to publish abroad in order to get royalties that many readers abroad do not buy books, because they can borrow from the library; so, for writers abroad, it’s not always the royalties, but the readings organized by the publishing companies. Okey Ndibe, for instance, went to so many places because of his book for readings. This is where Nigerian publishers are defaulting, because they just publish the books and that’s all.

“I believe in marketing my books, because, when you leave it to the publishers, they will not tell you how many books sold. Here, in Nigeria, they may not edit your work –that’s why there are grammatical errors, unlike abroad where you can have up to 7 copy editors go over your work. It’s not all the time companies pay royalties; writers make money from readings, as well,” Professor  Ezeigbo’s voice trailed off, impacted on many listeners.

Fani-Kayode’s ‘Oath’ Claim Designed To Dampen Buhari’s Chatham House Success – APC

Posted on No comments

Muhammadu BuhariThe All Progressives Congress, APC, has reacted to the claim by the Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organization that its national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is planning to assume the position of vice president through the back door, saying the allegation was designed to divert attention from the successful outing of the APC presidential candidate, Muhammadu Buhari, at the Chatham House in London, Thursday.

The Director, Media and Publicity of the PDP presidential campaign, Femi Fani-Kayode, had at a press briefing on Friday, alleged that the vice presidential candidate of the APC, Professor Yemi Osinbajo (SAN), had been asked to take an oath and step down after six months if APC wins the March 28 presidential election.

He said the plan was one of the reasons the leadership of the opposition party was desperate for power.

“Senator Tinubu, according to our information, compelled Professor Osinbajo to swear to an oath that after six months in office, he would resign as the vice president in the likely event that their party wins”, Fani-Kayode said.

He added that “the wicked plot as laid out by the APC, is to force Professor Osinbajo to resign for senator Tinubu to be nominated by General Buhari as his replacement”.

But in a statement issued in London on Saturday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the leading opposition party said the PDP and the Jonathan Administration still do not have any answer to what has now become an epochal moment that has separated the wheat from the chaff.

“Our presidential candidate’s globally-acclaimed outing has presented Nigerians, and indeed the global community, to choose between an ineffective, incoherent, and incompetent President and an assertive, knowledgeable, dignified, purposeful and principled President-in-waiting.

“Having failed to discredit that outing with a rented crowd, some of whom confessed to have been paid to carry placards they do not understand, the PDP and the Jonathan Administration had resorted to making nauseating claims that were totally untrue, absolutely incomprehensible”, it said.

APC said the claim was the latest in a series of desperate moves by the PDP and the Jonathan Administration since the emergence of Gen. Buhari as the APC presidential candidate, and the clearest indication yet that they had no answer to the unstoppable momentum of a man of history.

“They had thrown everything imaginable at Gen. Buhari, but he had continued to wax stronger and stronger: They said he was not qualified, that he was too old, then they fabricated a medical report of an illness of their own choice, sponsored death wish adverted against him and instituted a myriad of court cases to stop him.

“After they failed to stop him, they went after the election itself, using the PVCs as a tool to launch a campaign for postponement and, when they realized that would not work, came up with the bogey of insecurity in the North-east to force a postponement of the election, hoping they could buy enough time to revive their electoral misfortune.

“With everything working against them, they engaged in a show of shame at The Chatham House that backfired badly, on the heels of their bare-faced lies that Gen. Buhari was hospitalized in London. The preposterous claim of a secret oath – reminiscent of what they do in their own party – by the spokesman of the Jonathan Campaign Organization, Femi Fani-Kayode, is their latest desperate act”, the party said.

APC said in as much as it had so far refrained from engaging Fani-Kayode in his game of character, abuses and irresponsible name calling, the party was becoming seriously concerned that he may be caving under pressure and reverting to his undignified past of substance abuse.

Serenades for Septuagenarian thespian Oba Sonuga unites culture aficionados

Posted on No comments

Oba Sonuga

BY ONAOLATOMIRIN FALADE

In Western civilization, our elders are books –books with pages brimming with wisdom, knowledge and understanding. Oba Gbadebo Olugbenga Sonuga, the Fadesewa of Simawa, who recently clocked 70, is just an exemplar. In commemoration of his landmark age, the septuagenarian gathered friends, family, former colleagues, mentees and arts and culture aficionados for a cultural fiesta/book launch on Thursday, February 19 at the Freedom Park, Lagos.

The day began with the presentation of the celebrant’s photo autobiography entitled Deep as the Ocean. In the autobiography, the king recounts his experience and viewpoints as a heritage of historical photography spanning over 70 years.

During the book launch session, Oba Sonuga launched what promised to become an annual lecture on the importance of retaining our essence of arts and culture, particularly in its impact on community building and the selection and election of leaders.

For many years, the quintessential monarch has been a strong voice and advocate in the fight for change and excellence in the arts and culture sector, having been under the tutelage of Prof. Wole Soyinka, who he fondly calls Mon Prof, while working under Demas Nwoko for a decade at the New Culture Studios, Ibadan, after which he ran a film company called 4Reels.

Before being crowned the Fadesewa of Simawa in Makun Sagamu, Oba Sonuga, fondly called Oba Arts and Culture or Baba Culture, was the Director for the Lagos State Council for Art and Culture under the late Governor Mudasiru, where he served for ten years. As a director, he produced a touring performance of Ori by the state troupe to the United States. He also wrote and produced a play for the World Decade for Cultural Development, declared by the UN via UNESCO in 1989 called Salt, which was rehearsed for three months and performed for one night only at the National Theatre Main Bowl, where few have been privileged to perform. After formal public service he founded the International Centre for the Arts, Lagos (ICAL).

Oba Gbenga is truly a living legend and cultural icon in Nigerian arts and culture history. He has, over the years, mentored and worked with icons, like Otunba Sola Fosudo, Mufu Onifade, Toyin Gbajumo, Kunle Bantefa, among others.

The birthday celebration was well attended, needless to say, Oba Sonuga was serenaded. The evening session had in attendance many industry icons, including Ifayemi Elebuibon, Araba of Osun land; Peter Badejo a.k.a. Lord of the dance; Abiodun Ayoyinka, Mufu Onifade, Araism himself; Professor Olusoga Sofola, former Vice-Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University; Jahman Anikulapo, veteran journalist and director, IREP International Documentary Film Festival; Wale Macaulay, actor par excellence and grandson of Herbert Macaulay; Yemi Sodimu, former Special Adviser on Information in Ogun State; Arnold Udoka, current Dance Director of the National Troupe of Nigeria, amongst many others. Otunba Sola Fosudo did a marvelous job as a compeer, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats.

The evening session opened with a fervent gyration by members of the National Troupe of Nigeria, looking resplendent in their white and green ensemble. The ICAL Troupe came up immediately after with (Ajigbo) Badagry dance, after which the Lagos State Council for Arts & Culture came up with a performance, “Limbs of OGS” (Oba Gbenga Sonuga). Their performance attracted resounding applause from the audience, especially with Papa Ajasco mounting the stage and thrilling the audience with some Ijebu (Yengben) dance moves.

Crown Troupe of Africa further set the bar higher as the performers mounted the stage in characteristic energy, rendering a fast-paced, enthralling and objective performance. Though their theme was based on a message for the coming elections and the need for people to vote for the right leader, they melded it with a chant led by Amulegbajo, who extoled the Fadesewa with Yoruba traditional praises that earned him a royal whisk of the “irukere”. Next was the performance of a royal ballad entitled “Edu” written by Mufu Onifade. The ballad, performed by Adunni, Nefertiti and Wale Macaulay, was a compendium of songs, poetry and chants luxuriantly embroiled in wise sayings and royal innuendos. The lovely ladies of Nefertiti were elegantly garbed and well costumed, carrying their trademark maracas with which they created rich accompaniment for their songs. Wale Macaulay, of course, lived up to his name with his powerful rendition and all-round stage charisma. The National Troupe took the stage immediately, after with their riveting Kolanut Dance choreographed by Arnold Udoka. Their unique and well-knit performance further trilled the audience when three maidens of the troupe carried little baskets of kolanut into the audience, serving the Fadesewa and Olori Adepeju first before serving the seated audience.

The children of the ICAL troupe came next with Atilogwu dance. Their performance was followed by a unique dual performance from Footprints and Kings and Queens’ troupe. Despite young age, their performance was one of the most captivating. Aside their message of cultural revitalization, they showcased rare talent destined for the future. Another performance by the Lagos State Council for Arts and Culture brought Oba Sonuga up the stage with his friends and family, with joining the dance.

An unforgettable experience, the Araba of Osun land, Ifayemi Elebuibon, closed the cultural session the traditional way with prayers and blessings for the Fadesewa at 70. To further mark the occasion, the king premiered the video recording of Salt for the first time ever since its performance in 1989. During his time at the council in Lagos, he edited and published one of the first dedicated books on Lagos life and culture to wide and global acclaim.

He had, also, at a time, taken a troupe to FESTAC 77, where the current DG of the National Troupe of Nigeria, Akinsola Adejuwon, was working with him. Oba Gbenga Sonuga also set up the International Centre for the Art, Lagos, to promote Nigerian arts and culture both on the continent and internationally. Chaired by the late Ambassador Chief Segun Olusola, ICAL went on to stage many cultural interventions in London, the United States, Ethiopia and others, some funded by grants provided by the Ford Foundation.

Gbemisola Saraki Denies Rumoured Defection From PDP

Posted on No comments

Gbemisola-SarakiOne of the most visible female political figures in Kwara State and first daughter of the late strongman of Kwara politics, Dr Olusola Saraki, Senator Gbemisola Saraki, has denied plans to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The rumours were rife of recent that Gbemisola was planning to dump the PDP over alleged irreconcilable differences between her and leaders of the party in the state.

The rumour was further strengthened when Gbemisola failed to make a showing at President Godluck Jonathan’s re-election campaign rally in the state recently.

She was also visibly absent at the launch of the party’s state-wide campaign at Bode Saadu in Moro local government area of the state.

But speaking with journalists at the Ilorin International Airport yesterday, the former senator expressed concern that the 2015 election has paid more attention on rumours and ‘stories’ than on real issues.

“The problem with this election is that it has been filled with rumours and counter rumour and stories. We should make the election issue-based and not rumours”, she said when asked to react to rumours of her planned defection.

Asked what instruction has been passed to her followers, many of whom thronged the airport to welcome her, Gbemisola said, “My folllowers are seasoned politicians; we are seasoned politicians. We understand the system and we know what is important. I don’t need to advise them on what to do because they know what to do and insha Allah, they shall do it when the time comes”.

Card Reader: Many People Will Be Disenfranchised On Election Day, Says Jonathan Campaign Finance Director

Posted on No comments

Nenadi UsmanThe Director of Finance, Jonathan/Sambo Presidential Campaign Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, Friday expressed concern that many voters would be disenfranchised if the card reader is used during the forthcoming general elections.

According to Usman, the card reader could take up to 60 seconds to be done with one voter thereby causing delay in accrediting other voters.

She voiced her concerns shortly after an outreach programme organised by the campaign organisation where materials were distributed to over 300 support groups in Kaduna.

According to the senator, the card reader does not work fast enough to accredit many eligible voters.

She said: “I think the card reader is a good thing but the only disadvantage is that many people are going to be disenfranchised on the day of elections because the card reader from what I saw at the demonstration in the Senate, it cannot possibly accredit more than one person per minute.

“So it has been programmed that on that day it is going to accredit for five hours. And if it is going to accredit one person per minute, it means in one hour, it will accredit 60 people, which will translate to accreditation of 300 people in five hours.

“So, if a polling unit has more than 300 people I don’t see more than 300 people getting accreditation done. So, that is just the issue”.

NEW CONTRACT: IS KESHI JINXED?

Posted on No comments

Stephen-Keshi

May have no option but to stick to Eagles

BY GEORGE ALUO

After the Brazil 2014 World Cup, the Big Boss as Stephen Keshi is fondly called told whoever cared to listen that he is through with the Super Eagles.

Keshi who looked quite unruffled after the Eagles were ousted by France in the second round of the mundial in the city of Brasilia told reporters covering the World Cup, including this writer that he was dumping the Eagles for one of the over 10 countries that were jostling for his signature.

But several months after the World Cup, Keshi is still literally floating with no contract in the kitty. It would be recalled that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has since after the Brazil outing not renewed his contract. His failure to qualify Nigeria for the 2015 Nations Cup in Equatorial Guinea did not help matters.

Although the NFF are reluctantly on the verge of offering Keshi a new contract, both parties (NFF and Keshi) would no doubt have preferred to part ways. Should Keshi accept whatever the NFF is offering him, that would be the case of a coach that has no choice.

A look at what has happened in the last six month shows that Keshi has traversed the length and breath of Africa looking for a new contract that has remained elusive.

First the coach was in South Africa where everything looked good for him to take over Bafana Bafana. In fact the media both local and foreign was awash with news that Keshi has landed it big in South Africa. Few days after the news broke, SAFA issued a release denying any deal with Keshi, even as they went ahead to settle for their man Shakes Mashaba who went ahead to stop Keshi and his rag tag Eagles from qualifying for the 2015 Nations Cup.

When the South Africa dust settled another news started flying as Keshi was linked to the Black Stars of Ghana job. Again the GFA cleared the air insisting that they had nothing to do with the Big Boss. Ghana has since hired former Chelsea manager Avram Grant who started on a fine note as he led Ghana to the final of the just concluded Nations Cup.

From Accra, attention on Keshi and his hunt for a new job shifted to Luanda, Angola and just like the other countries, Angola opted to look elsewhere for who to manage the Palancas Negras.

When nothing worked in Luanda, Keshi crossed over to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and held discussions with the Ethiopian soccer federation. The Ethiopians who were apparently impressed with the way Keshi dealt with them during the Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifiers surprisingly refused to play ball and offer him contract.

Few days after accepting to host the Nations Cup, Equatorial Guinea who were without a coach started shopping for one, with Keshi again on their wanted list. Keshi stormed Malabo and was there when the Nations Cup draw was held, unfortunately he (Keshi) lost the job to a Portuguese coach who eventually led the tiny East and Central African country to a historic semi final place in the recently concluded Nations Cup on home soil.

Just this week one was about to shout halleluyah that finally Keshi has sealed a new deal in Burkina Faso when news filtered in that the Burkinabes have opted to settle for German manager Germot Rohr.

When things were looking like going Keshi’s way in Burkina, NFF boss Pinnick Amaju was quick in stating that they wont stop Keshi from accepting the Stallions job. Another NFF official who pleaded anonymity told Saturday Sunsports that they were actually praying for Keshi to land it big outside since that would end their unholy romance with the Big Boss. He was quick to point out that the soccer federation’s hands were tied as far as the Keshi saga is concerned.

“The truth is that if we have our way, we would go for another coach. But you that our hands are tied on this matter as the God fathers working for the Big Boss are hell bent on our retaining him,” the NFF official said.

Keshi has on his part has made it clear that he wont hesitate to go elsewhere if he gets a job outside the nation’s shores. Before jetting out to Ouagadougou to negotiate with the Burkina Faso FA , Keshi said coaching the Eagles was not a do or die affair. He stressed that though he would love to serve his fatherland, he cant afford to be waiting for the NFF contract that appears to be taking eternity to come.

As things stand now, Keshi may have no option but to settle for the Eagles job despite the reduced pay the NFF is offering him.

2015 Presidency: Buhari is Tinubu’s creation – PDP

Goje Tinubu N Buhari

FROM TAIWO AMODU, ABUJA

The Peoples Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Organisation, (PDPPCO) has alleged that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), General Muhammadu Buhari and his running mate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo were imposed on the party to achieve what he called a sinister agenda of former Lagos state governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Recall that General Buhari emerged as a candidate at the party presidential convention held last year in Lagos.

But addressing newsmen last night in Abuja, Director of Media and Publicity of PDPPCO, Femi Fani-Kayode claimed that both General Buhari and Professor Osinbajo were a creation of Tinubu to achieve his motive of ruling the country through the backdoor.

The former Aviation Minister alleged that Professor Osinbajo has been compelled “ to swear to an oath that after six months in office, he would resign as the vice president, in the unlikely event that their party wins.”

Fani-Kayode further alleged that the former Lagos governor and national leader of the APC ultimate aim was to succeed General Buhari given what Fani Kayode claimed to be General Buhari’s faiiling health and the evil expectation of Bola Tinubu “ that General Buhari will not be able to go the whole hog.

Thief returns Lupita’s Oscar dress, says the so called pearls were a worthless fake

Posted on No comments

image

So Lupita’s $150,000 dress was just a big Hollywood fat lie? *sigh*. According to TMZ, Lupita Nyong’o’s Oscar gown was returned to The London West Hollywood hotel where it was taken from. There’s a twist however. The thief called TMZ to tell them where it could be found as the Calvin Klein dress allegedly worth $150K, was a worthless fake.

image

The thief called saying he had taken the dress from Lupita’s hotel room after he noticed the door was ajar. He and others took two pearls off of the dress and took them to the garment district in downtown L.A where he was told they were fake. Lol. Pic of the dress after it was found above. Continue…

The thief according to TMZ, then decided to take the dress back to the Hotel in a garment bag that was inside a trash bag and deposited on a 2nd floor bathroom adjacent to a fitness center.

TMZ contacted the L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept. and gave them the info. The police went over to the hotel, and they found a garment bag with the dress inside just as the thief had described. His Nerve lol..Scene of the crime above.

The thief said he contacted TMZ because he wanted the world to know “Hollywood’s fake bulls**t.” A thief is a thief though.

No cause for alarm, Jonathan is coming back – Omisore

Omisore new

■ Says APC is full of noise makers

Senator Iyiola Omisore recently spoke on the current political issues, especially the struggle between PDP and APC for the soul of the South-West. He believes that, in spite of the “noises from APC”, his party, PDP will recover lost states. Among other issues, he also talked on the controversies dogging Gen Muhammadu Buhari’s certificates and the place of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo in the coming elections.

He spoke to TUNDE THOMAS.

Excerpt:

The general elections are around the corner, how would you rate the chances of President Goodluck Jonathan and Namadi Sambo getting block votes from the South-West?

For all human thinkers, and those who really appreciate what has been done by the Jonathan administration, what he has done in the last six years, no past administrations had done such. Look at the transformation in the rail sector. For the first time in over 30 years, trains are back on the tracks. What about the agric sector – look at positive transformation in that sector. Farmers are now smiling to the bank. Fertilisers are being provided farmers without fears or stress. This was unlike the past when some middlemen and syndicates diverted fertilizers and prevented them from getting to the farmers.

What about the power sector? We should be honest and humble enough to give credit to whom it is due. I believe common sense will prevail, and Nigerians would re-elect Jonathan for a second term. I have no doubt that Jonathan will win the election.

Those who are using Boko Haram to campaign, that is APC, are making a mistake. You don’t use terrorism to campaign. It is wrong. When you use terrorism to campaign, you are not being patriotic. It is very saddening that APC could be using issue of terrorism to campaign. Terrorism issue is not limited to Nigeria. United States of America is facing challenges in that area. What about Algeria that is even an Islamic country, it took them about 18 years to tackle the problem.

APC is just trying to cause confusion – you don’t use terrorism to campaign. If you know how to combat terrorism or any advice to give, why not give it to the Council of State? APC is desperate. APC is synonymous with Boko Haram and Boko Haram has endorsed them, and that is why the party is using Boko Haram to campaign. Why do you want to use the lives of people to campaign?

Still talking about the South-West, APC is firmly in control of many states, and with the crisis in PDP, especially the Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s issue, do you think PDP still stands a chance to make impact?

Look at what happened in Osun State, the revelations during the tribunal sitting, we had the highest number of votes in all the local government areas, based on genuine votes, there is no way Aregbesola can win Osun State for Buhari; Jonathan will win there. PDP will carry the day, so also in other states of the South-West. After the election of last year, APC had gone worse in Osun State. I don’t see Buhari scoring 25 per cent votes in Osun State. Our people are tired of APC. APC is just making noise.

Some people are saying that without genuine reconciliation and taking Obasanjo’s factor into consideration, it will be an uphill task for PDP to make the desired impact in South-West?

I don’t want to talk about Obsanjo. Baba has only one vote to cast on the day of election. He is also entitled to his own opinion. He is not only a leader in his own right but also a statesman.

I think Baba will vote for PDP forget whatever crisis or grievances. Before the election, I believe all the right things that would facilitate Jonathan’s re-election would have been done. There is no cause for alarm. Jonathan is coming back. Nigerians will cast their votes for him. Many Nigerians will see the realities before the day of the election, and that at the end, commonsense will prevail.

Talking about crisis, even your party in Osun State is embroiled in crisis between the state chairman and the publicity secretary, what is being done to resolve the crisis?

What crisis is that one? Between who and who? What you are talking about is not an issue at all. There is no crisis in our state chapter. The differences between two persons you mentioned have been resolved. It is our opponents that are making noise about the matter. It is not an issue at all.

With the election fast approaching, there are tension and fears. What is your take?

What I find disturbing is the attack on the president’s campaign entourage in Kaduna, Bauchi and one or two other states. There is no need for violence. Do your own campaign, and let your opponent also do his own. Live and let live. Don’t force anybody to go your own way. Buhari has come to the South to campaign and nobody has attacked him.

I want to implore the leadership of APC to stop all forms of gangsterism. I don’t know why APC is desperate as if all their lives depend on this election. The election is not supposed to be a do-or-die affair.

What is your reaction to the postponement?

I don’t know what the law says about it. But what I want to tell Nigerians that my party is ready for the polls. My position is that INEC should ensure that Nigerians collect their PVCs.

What is your reaction to the ongoing controversy over the issue of General Buhari’s certificate?

Two things are clear, General Buhari perjured. He admitted this himself. There is nothing like assumption in law, when he said he assumed that result was somewhere. Secondly, he claimed that he sat for Hausa Language in Cambridge examination in 1961 whereas Cambridge incorporated Hausa Language into its examination in 1964.

This mean that Buhari has been benefitting from this country and ruling it illegally. Buhari is not fit to rule Nigeria, but because he surrounds himself with certificate forgers…we all still remember Chicagogate scandal. These people are birds of the same feather, they are not fit to rule this country.

So, what should he do?

Ideally, Buhari should withdraw from the race. But this is Nigeria; people would not do what they are supposed to do when they have been found on the wrong side of the law. It is sad that Nigerians have forgotten so soon some of Buhari’s past misdeeds.

He was the one responsible for brain drain when he proscribed Nigerian Medical Association (NMA). Buhari, as Head of State, was a draconian ruler. After NMA’s proscription, many professionals started leaving Nigeria in search of greener pastures abroad. What about retroactive decrees his regime promulgated, which led to some Nigerians being executed? Nigerians have short memory, if not, there is no basis for anybody to support Buhari’s presidential bid.

How do you see the peace pact signed by Jonathan and Buhari?

It is a good development. In a country where people are destroying billboards and attacking people, it is sad. But the peace accord is already failing because APC is going against it, and by the time PDP reacts, there will be problem. Nobody or group has monopoly of violence. Buhari and his co-travellers in APC should be of good behaviour. They should let Nigeria be. Nigeria will survive all of us.
