Toni Payne Criticizes EFCC’s Focus On Naira Abuse, Questions National Priorities

Thursday, 8 May 2025

Nigerian photographer and influencer Toni Payne has criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for its recent focus on the issue of naira abuse by Nigerian celebrities.

In a passionate social media post on Wednesday, Payne expressed her frustration over what she sees as the country’s misplaced priorities.

She highlighted the more pressing issues in Nigeria, such as poverty, power shortages, and unemployment, while questioning the EFCC’s actions regarding money spraying at events.

“Naija has the most messed up priorities out of all the problems facing the country. Spraying money (even dollars that isn’t their currency) is their issue?” Payne said. “People are starving, there is no steady power supply, and there’s a lack of jobs, and this is what they’re focused on? I’m convinced the powers that be want to keep people miserable because why try to remove such a joyful tradition?”

She further criticised the constant invitations extended by the EFCC to celebrities over the act of spraying money at social events. Payne also suggested that Nigerians might need to consider hosting their events outside of the country.

“What’s the goal? Wow! People should start taking their events out of Naija. If something so minuscule can get you arrested, it’s insane!! Imagine saying putting it on someone’s body is a crime. So, if I had your money normally, is that not part of your body?” she wrote.

Payne also mentioned how actress Iyabo Ojo had carefully handled the money spraying at an event, yet still faced an invitation from the EFCC.

“Destination events are the way to go. Forget that. I trust my people, they will find a way around it. Digital bank alert cards or something, cos wtf,” Payne concluded.
