Veteran Indian actor Manoj Kumar, known for his patriotic roles in Hindi films, has died on Friday at the age of 87.
The passing of the man nicknamed “Bharat” Kumar — a title drawn from the ancient Sanskrit name for India, rich in Hindu religious symbolism — triggered an outpouring of tributes nationwide.
Kumar, a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), died in Mumbai from heart-related complications.

Prime Minister Modi led the tributes, describing Kumar as an “icon” of Indian cinema and stating that his films “ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations.”
Known for weaving messages of patriotism into his storytelling, Kumar often took on roles — and sometimes directorial duties — that celebrated national unity and pride.
Originally named Harikrishan Goswami, he adopted the name Manoj Kumar, following Bollywood tradition.
He received numerous national awards, including the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which is India’s highest honour in cinema.
Kumar began his career in Indian cinema in the late 1950s.
He continued to star in several films, many of which focused on patriotic themes, including Upkar (1967), Purab Aur Pachhim (1970), and Kranti (1981).
