Mojisola Meranda Makes Political Shift, Re-elected Deputy Speaker Of Lagos Assembly

Tuesday, 4 March 2025

Moji Meranda has been re-elected as the Deputy Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, marking a significant shift in her political journey.

Prior to this role, Meranda served as the Speaker of the assembly for 49 days, a position she assumed following the suspension of the former Speaker, Mudashiru Obasa

Her tenure as Speaker was historic, as she broke barriers by becoming one of the few women to ever hold the position in the state’s legislative history.

During her time as Speaker, Meranda focused on fostering unity and addressing key legislative issues, earning respect from her colleagues.

However, her resignation as Speaker came after a meeting with high-ranking All Progressives Congress (APC) members to resolve a leadership crisis.

Following her resignation, Obasa was reinstated as Speaker, while Meranda was re-elected as Deputy Speaker.

On Monday, during the plenary session of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda officially announced her resignation: “This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,”

“I resigned to protect the state assembly, i am not a quitter

“For now I take a bow as your Speaker,” she announced.

Mojisola Meranda resigned as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly alongside all the principal officers who were appointed alongside her. Her resignation came after a crucial meeting with high-ranking members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) aimed at resolving the ongoing leadership crisis within the assembly. The decision to step down, along with her team, marked a significant shift in the assembly’s leadership dynamics.
