“Marlian Records Was Like Prison To Me” – Fabian Blu Speaks On His Time At The Label

Sunday, 23 February 2025

Fabian Blu, a former Marlian Records signee, has revealed the challenging experiences he faced while signed to the controversial record label owned by Naira Marley.

In a recent interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, shared on Instagram on Saturday, the singer criticised the label he was signed to from 2020 to 2022.

Blu described his time at Marlian Records as being similar to being “imprisoned.”

While at the label owned by Naira Marley, the singer released five tracks, including ‘Instagram’ and ‘Rolla Costa’.

He also worked with other Marlian Records signees, including Zinoleesky and the late Mohbad.

In the interview, the singer revealed that his time at the label was plagued by accusations of tribalism, exploitation, and substance abuse.

He also claimed that the label’s management hindered his creativity, compelling him to create music that adhered to their expectations instead of his personal artistic vision.

Blu accused Marlian Records of withholding his music royalties since his departure from the label in 2022.

“I got introduced to drugs in Marlian Music. I got signed to the record label. I have never liked the whole Marlian music kind of lifestyle. They were too gangster,” he said.

“I have met a lot of Yoruba people as friends. But getting to that Marlian music, I met a different set of Yoruba people. There was tribalism in the record. It was chaotic and dysfunctional.

“I was not given the free will to express my creativity. All of my songs in Marlian Music were a result of they wanted it to sound that way. They have not given me my share of royalties ever since I have been with them.

“That place was like a prison to me. When Mohbad died. I was abused in Marlian music because I was not a Muslim I cannot get favours from them.”

Marlian Music has come under heavy scrutiny and criticism following the tragic death of singer Mohbad on September 12, 2023.

There have been allegations of mistreatment against Marlian Music during Mohbad’s time at the label, with his family and wife, Omowunmi, seeking justice and accountability.

The controversy has also ignited public outrage, with calls for a comprehensive investigation into both the circumstances of Mohbad’s death and the treatment of artists by the label.

The incident has also brought attention to concerns about the exploitation and mistreatment of artists within the music industry.
