Always Run Background Checks Before Marrying Someone – Chiwetalu Agu

Saturday, 1 February 2025

Veteran actor Chiwetalu Agu has offered advice to both singles and married individuals, highlighting the need for caution and self-preservation in relationships.

Agu cautioned singles against being overly eager to marry, warning that desperation could make them overlook red flags.

He also warned against choosing a partner solely for their looks or due to societal pressure.

Speaking to married couples, Agu encouraged those in unhappy or toxic relationships to seek support or consider ending the marriage.

He stressed that a person’s happiness and well-being should come first, noting that “marriage is not a do-or-die affair.”

Agu also suggested that individuals carefully investigate the backgrounds of potential spouses before deciding to marry.

The experienced actor wrapped up his advice by cautioning against overlooking warning signs in relationships.

He pointed out that remaining in an abusive or toxic relationship can lead to severe consequences, emphasising that “divorce is better than dying at the hands of a toxic and abusive partner.”

He said in a video shared on X Friday, “Marriage is not a do-or-die affair. If you have an abusive partner, run for your life. If you are in a toxic relationship, run for your life. If you are not happy in your marriage, seek help or run for your life.

“Divorce is better than “rest in peace”. “I want to stay because of my children”. That was how a lady was killed. Now, who will take care of the kids? Is it the man that killed you? Or the relatives who love their own families?

“Always remember to run background checks before marrying someone.

“He is handsome; I want to marry him”: see you, see death. “My mates are all married, but I’m still single”: see you, see death.”
