DSS Detains Two Lagos Lawmakers Over Obasa’s Impeachment

Friday, 31 January 2025

Mudashiru Obasa

In a move that has sparked widespread concern, the Department of State Services (DSS), on Thursday, detained two members of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

The Assembly members, Lanre Afinni (Lagos Island Constituency 2) and Sylvester Ogunkelu (Epe II constituency), were detained in connection with the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.

According to sources within the Assembly as disclosed by Vanguard, the two lawmakers were arrested at their office in Magodo, Lagos, and are currently facing interrogation.

Obasa was removed as Speaker by 35 members on January 13 and replaced with Mojisola Meranda, the former Deputy Speaker.

Also, a source in the DSS told Punch, “They were just invited for questioning.”

“On the day of Obasa’s removal, the then Clerk of the House, Barrister Lekan Onafeko was not in the House and his office was locked,” Sahara Reporters quoted a source as saying.

Another said, “Hon. Ogunkelu, aka Sketel and Hon. Afinni physically led the charge to fetch the mace for the House sitting and had to destroy the door and some government properties to get hold of the symbol of authority.

“It is on these grounds that the police invited them. As we speak, Sketel is in detention while Afinni was released due to his health challenges.”

The Deputy Speaker, Mojeed Fatai, and other lawmakers have since stormed the DSS office to demand the release of their detained colleagues.

The development has also drawn the ire of a socio-political group, the Concerned Citizens of Lagos.

In a statement, the group’s representative, Murphy Ajibola, condemned the arrest, saying: “These actions appear to be part of a broader strategy to pressure the Assembly into overturning the removal of former Speaker.

“This orchestrated campaign against elected representatives is not just an attack on individual lawmakers; it is an assault on democracy.”

The group emphasized that the Legislature exists to check executive power and represent the people, warning that when lawmakers are intimidated or arrested under questionable circumstances, democracy is at risk.
