Kwara Govt Shuts Down 10 Schools Over Hijab Controversy In Ilorin
Abdulrahman Abdulrazaq

The Kwara State government has ordered immediate closure of ten schools in Ilorin over hijab controversy.

This was contained in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Mrs Kemi Adeosun on Friday.

She stated that the schools would remain closed until there is a resolution on the use of hijab.

The schools affected, are C&S College, Sabo Oke; St Anthony College, Offa Road; ECWA School, Oja Iya; Surulere Baptist School, Bishop Smith Secondary School, Agba Dam; St Barnabas Secondary School, Sabo Oke; St John School, Maraba; St Williams Secondary School, Taiwo Isale and James Secondary School, Maraba.

The statement said that the closure comes as a government committee comprising representatives of the Muslim and Christian communities meets today to iron out the differences between the two communities.

Recall that Muslim stakeholders at a press conference on Wednesday called on the state government to prevail on former owners of public schools in the state to allow female Muslim students to wear hijab on their uniform.

The Muslim community said that since the state government had taken over such schools, the former missionary owners do no longer have control over the schools.
