Governor Godwin Obaseki approves funds for visually impaired residents

Tuesday 8 August 2017

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has approved the payment of a special bursary for visually-impaired students of tertiary institutions.

Obaseki said that the beneficiaries of the scheme would be natives of Edo State.

The governor gave the approval on Monday when he received the state executive members of the Nigeria Association of the Blind at the Government House in Benin.

While stressing that it was government’s responsibility to cater for persons living with disabilities, he urged the association to compile the names of its members who were students in tertiary institutions for onward transmission to the Ministry of Education to enable them benefit from the scheme.

“Persons with disabilities are part of the society and it is obligatory on the part of government to ensure that they are well taken care of,” the governor said.

He promised that a special education department would be established for PLWDs either at the College of Education, Abudu, or at the Tayo Akpata University of Education in Ekiadolor.

Obaseki, who noted that a Braille press would also be set up in the state, announced a donation of N1m to the association.

Earlier, the State Chairman of the association, Mr. Nosakhare Asemota, commended the governor’s efforts in improving the education sector in the state.

Asemota also noted that the visit was aimed at soliciting the state government’s support in addressing some of the challenges facing the members.
