From DOM EKPUNOBI, Onitsha
The Senatorial candidate of the Mega Progressive Peoples Party (MPPP) in the April 28 senatorial election for Anambra Central Senatorial District, Chris Ekweozoh, has taken Uche Ekwunife of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to court over her declaration as winner of the election.
Joined in the suit are the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Returning Officer in the 2015 senatorial election for Anambra Central Senatorial District.
In his petition filed at the election tribunal sitting in Anambra State, Ekweozoh, a lawyer, stated that the election in which Ekwunife was declared winner, was invalid by reason of alleged corrupt practices and non-compliance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2010, as amended, adding that they affected the outcome of the election. In his eight-paragraph affidavit in support of the claim, Ekweozoh, insisted that Ekwunife was not duly elected by majority of lawful votes cast at the election.
He alleged that INEC did not release the identification tag of his agents in that election, adding that the commission erroneously released his agent’s tag to one Evang Sam Amdika, who was not known to him. The MPPP senatorial candidate stated that his polling unit and collation agents were not allowed to participate in the election and consequently, he was left without agents in the election. Also he deposed that the agents of the 1st and 2nd respondents with the agents of the 3rd respondent allegedly falsified the results of the votes cast, which the PDP candidate was declared winner of the election.
