Asisat Oshoala capped a memorable night with a goal and assist in Liverpool Ladies’ 2-1 win over Manchester City Women’s FC.
The Nigeria international striker, fresh from earning nomination for the inaugural BBC Sport Women’s Footballer of the Year award on Sunday, scored and assisted Line Smorsgard goal as Matt Beard’s side returned to winning ways at the Select Security stadium.
Liverpool Ladies were 1-0 up at the breat after Oshoala had capitalized on a goal-mouth scramble to head home a Fara Williams cross.
City leveled scores in the 53rd minute, when Parris thumped home an Isobel Christiansen’s free-kick.
Having suffered a 1-0 defeat away to Chelsea Ladies last week, Liverpool ensured there were no further slip-ups with Oshoala orchestrating a comeback win on 57 minutes.
The reigning African women’s footballer of the year sent an inch-perfect cross from the right to Norwegian forward Smorsgard who thumped home her first goal for the Merseyside club to make it 2-1.

Earlier in the day, the BBC World Service announced the shortlist for the inaugural BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year prize.
Oshoala, who was voted MVP at the Under-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the African Women’s Championship both in 2014, is up against Veronica Boquete (Spain and FFC Frankfurt), Nadine Kessler (Germany and VFL Wolfsburg), Kim Little (Scotland and Seattle Reign FC), Marta (Brazil and FC Rosengard).
“I worked hard last year but I am surprised to be nominated and I feel very appreciated,” Oshoala said after her nomination.
“This award is a very good thing for women’s football. It can really help us by encouraging other countries to support their ladies more and treat them the same way they treat the men.
“A lot of people tried to discourage me but I never let that bother me – I did what I want to do.”
A panel of experts including administrators, journalists, coaches and former players picked the shortlist.
