FROM EMMANUEL ADEYEMI, lokoja

An American missionary, Rev.  Mrs. Phillis Sortor, aged 87, was on Monday abducted by   gunmen in Kogi State.

An eyewitness said Sortor, a missionary worker with Methodist Church, based in Emi-woro community along Ajaokuta/Okene Road, was kidnapped within the church premises by six masked gunmen at about 10a.m.

A man, who identified himself as Pastor Jacob Ahiaba, said he was at a meeting with the woman when the gunmen suddenly invaded the school and swooped on her.

The cleric, who said he was the administration assistant to the victim, said the hoodlums jumped over the wall from a nearby bush into the church premises, which also housed Hope Academy, a group of primary and secondary schools run by the church.

He said the gunmen rushed into the office and asked everybody to lie down.

In his words: “I saw them taking the woman away and I asked them why they were doing that as the woman was very old and fragile, and one of them hit my head with the butt of the gun.

“They took her across the wall into the bush and up till now we have not seen her. We later alerted the police,” he said.

When contacted over the issue, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in the state, Sola Collins confirmed the incident and said the woman was dragged to climb the hill along with them when she was abducted.

He said the police had fortified the scene of the crime while crack detectives were on the trail of the abductors.

Three separate abduction cases have been recorded in the Central Senatorial district of the state with the latest being a Director of Local Government, who was rescued last weekend.
