FROM PAUL OSUYI, ASABA
It was naira rain on Thursday night in Asaba, the Delta State capital at the dinner/ fund raising organised by the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for next month’s general election in the state.
Over N800 million was realized with the chief launcher and chairman of Rainoil, Gabriel Ugbechie and deputy chairman of the party in the the South- South, Dr. Cairo Ojougboh making the highest donation of N100 million each.
The ceremony which was presided over by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan saw donors from the three senatorial districts of the state and well wishers from other states dipping deep into their pockets to dole out huge sums of money.
While an aspirant for the state House of Assembly, Michael Diden and friends made a donation of N50 million, chairman of the party’s Board of Trustees, Chief Tony Anenih donated N25 million.
Apparently impressed, governorship candidate of the party, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa pledged to make judicious use of the money by ensuring that he, President Goodluck Jonathan and all the PDP candidates win the forthcoming poll.
He pledged that all the PDP candidates will have access to the money as a victory for him will be meaningless if the other candidates of the party lose.
“With the support we are getting on the field and today’s naira rain, we will win in February. The fund is for all the candidates in the election. If I win and all the other candidates lose, then I have lost but I don’t lose elections,” he affirmed.
