FROM LAYI OLANREWAJU, ILORIN
Major political parties and their gubernatorial candidates in the forthcoming elections in Kwara State yesterday signed an accord for peaceful conduct.
The peace agreement, dubbed “Ilorin Accord” was signed by 15 parties and their candidates who are expected to take part in the elections. Labour Party was the only party absent at the event which took place at INEC headquarters in Ilorin.
Resident Electoral Commissioner for the state, Dr. Emmanuel Onucheyo, described the event as first of its kind after a similar exercise by the national headquarters of the commission.
Kwara State governor and candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji AbduFattah Ahmed and his counterpart from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Simon Ajibola, who had earlier embraced one another to the delight of witnesses, pledged their support to the initiative.
Ahmed asked the organisers of the event to replicate the accord at the local government level, adding without peace, credible elections would be impossible.
The signatories also pledged to ensure that their supporters follow the same pledge they made towards peaceful conduct in all aspects of the election.
