Boko Haram in Abuja to intimidate FG - Presidency

Monday 30 June 2014

The Presidency has said that Boko Haram decided to intensify bombings in Abuja with the aim of intimidating the Federal Government.

It, however, warned that those who have hands in series of bombings across the country will pay for it at the fullest of time.

The Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe, said this on Sunday when he paid a condolence visit to the office of New Telegraph, whose Managing Editor, Northern Operations, Mr. Suleiman Bisala died at the Emab Plaza Bombing, which happened in Abuja, on Wednesday.

At least, 21 people were killed during the bombing.

He said, “This country will not go under because of insurgency. We are too large, too blessed than to be intimidated by the Boko Haram. Boko Haram is here in Abuja to intimidate the government.

“Government will not fold it hands. All those who have hands in this would pay for it at the fullest if time. These people (victims) are dead for an offence that they did not know.

“Boko Haram is about the fight for the soul of this country. What is the sense of bombing everywhere? It is struggle for power. God that sees the inner minds of Nigerians, will see us through.”

He said it was unfortunate that many innocent Nigerians were being killed for an offence they did not know, regretting that majority of those being killed didn’t know anything about politics.

For example, he said most of the people that died during the last bombing in abuja were either passers by, recharge card sellers, telephone sellers and people he said who were working and looking for their daily bread.

Okupe said, “90 per cent of them are not connected to politics. Yet, they are snatched away by the wicked few among us.

“It is a something I don’t know. I have children and I have blood running in me. What is the difference between me and Bisala? It could have happened to me. I send people to fix telephones there.

“This is aimed at all Nigerians. The security agencies are, I must tell you, I’m close to them, and I know what they do, majority of them have gone through hell and have lost their lives and those of loved ones. They don’t have shifts. The heart of men is wicked.”

He, however, gave an assurance that government would not give up its responsibility of protecting Nigerians and that Boko Haram would be defeated at the end.

The presidential aide said, “Boko haram mat kill us, may destroy our properties, they will not win.

“Nigeria will win the war against terrorism. By the grace of God, we will prevail. As a government, the incessant bombings worries government.

“The bombings will not derail government, it will not stop the government from protecting the citizens. We will continue to do what we needed to do to guarantee safety.

“Insurgency have been everywhere, but insurgency have never, never won. They were in Britain for 17 years, it stopped. In Srilanka, it stopped.

“Government and the security agencies were never prepaid for it. But now we are ready for it. We will defeat them. We have the resources and the men for it.

“By coming to abuja, it is to intimidate government and it is not going to work.”

Okupe said that some individuals were already working on how to form an NGO, which he said would bring succour to the families of victims of Boko Haram.

He said the NGO would come into stream in the ext few weeks.

Responding, the Acting of Abuja office of New Telegraph, Mr. Louis Achi, said the blast happened few minuted after Bisala left office.

He appealed to the government to find a lasting solution to the insecurity problems in the country.
