1 killed in Ebonyi cult clash

At least one person has been confirmed dead and property worth millions of naira  destroyed in Okposi in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State following a cult clash in the community.


Sources stated   that the clash was  between some youths suspected to be members of rival cult groups  in Okposi Okwu and Amenuegu Okposi villages.


It was gathered  that trouble started when a group of boys beat up  a girl from Amenuegu village and a boy from the village identified as Nwabueze protested the attack.


The boys were said to have  stabbed Nwabueze to death consequent upon which, youths of Okposi community went on rampage, destroying properties worth millions of naira.


The irate youths allegedly invaded  the shop and residential building of one Chief Nwankwo at Ohammahi Ndiunuhu in  Okposi Okwu, destroying the louvers, doors and ceiling of three building in the compound. They  also allegedly burnt two motorcycles and some domestic animals.


Narrating their ordeal to newsmen, younger brother to Chief Nwankwo, Mr. Lazarus Nwankwo,  said that the boys numbering over 20 and heavily armed, also beat  his elder brother to coma and took him away.


Another victim, Mrs.Okoro Eze  said that the youths burnt all her wares  and poured water on a sick woman aged over 100 years.


Mrs. Okoro, who admitted her son’s involvement in the beating of the deceased, stated that though the family handed over the boy to them, the youths still went ahead to destroy everything in the compound and took away her N12, 000.


The state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO)  confirmed the incident but  said that  the situation had been brought under control  by the policemen while investigation into the incident was in progress with the aim of arresting  and prosecuting  the culprits.
