Thursday 26 December 2013

From PAUL ORUDE, Bauchi

It was a sad Christmas Eve in Bauchi as seven persons were killed while five others sustained injuries when a commercial bus veered off the road and hit a truck along Alkaleri, Gombe Road. The accident, which took place at about 12.30pm happened about 50km from Bara Village in Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

An eye witness said that  an 18-seater commercial Mitsubishi bus with registration number AJ 779 TRN lost control at a sharp bend close to Bara and rammed into a dark blue articulated truck with registration number B8 79 MU, parked by the roadside.

The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Mr Sunday Henry Olatunji, disclosed that of the 12 persons that were involved in the auto crash, seven were confirmed dead while five sustained injuries. Olatunji said among the dead persons were three adult males, two male and two female children respectively while the other five that were injured were men.

He said his officers along with state rescue officials rushed to the scene of the accident, attributing it to the driver of the Mitsubish bus who was over speeding. He said the 12 victims of the crash, including the corpses of the dead persons were conveyed to the Federal Medical Centre in Gombe State.

The FRSC Sector Commander appealed to motorists in the state to be careful to observe traffic rules and regulations, especially during the Christmas celebration.
