National confab: Another wasteful exercise –ACF

Rising from its Board of Trustees and National Executive Council meetings yesterday, the apex northern socio-cultural group, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), has described the proposed national dialogue by the Federal Government as another wasteful exercise waiting to happen.

A communiqué issued at the end of the meeting and signed by the national publicity secretary of the ACF, Anthony Sani, pointed out that since decisions of past similar conferences were not implemented by the appropriate authorities, the proposed national conference would suffer same fate.

However, as a mark of faith in oneness of the country, the forum urged northerners and delegates with proven integrity to go ahead and participate in the national talkshop.

This was even as the Secretary of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kaduna State chapter, Reverend Sunday John, told Daily Sun in a chat that the national dialogue would provide the opportunity for religious issues to be looked into and trashed for the common good of the country.

The ACF communiqué read in part: “The meeting considered the decision of the Federal Government to convoke a national conference/national dialogue against the backdrop that the decisions of past conferences are yet to be implemented by the appropriate authorities. ACF, therefore, expressed doubt that the outcomes of the current exercise would not suffer the same fate.

“However, as a mark of good faith in the hope that real issues of real concern to real Nigerians may be discussed, ACF urged northerners to participate in the national conference/national dialogue in the interest of national solidarity that goes with relative pluralism. Towards this end, only delegates with proven public intelligence and patriotic courage should be encouraged and supported to attend the conference.

“The meeting also considered the calls for representations on the basis of equality of geopolitical zones or of states or of ethnic nationalities and given the common place knowledge that any hype in ethnic nationalism is too divisive for furthering the cause of national unity, ACF urged the government to use local government areas as constituent units for representation to the conference at one delegate per local government area.”
