The Sun Publishing Limited, publishers of The Sun Newspaper, in collaboration with Nnewi Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, NCCMIA yesterday shone at the 4th edition of Nnewi Economic Summit, 2013, with the stakeholders calling for collaboration.
The Managing Director/ Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Newspapers, Mr. Tony Onyima, in his lecture en-titled: South East and Future of family Businesses identified the challenges family businesses face in the contemporary society.
He listed among other challenges facing family business in the zone are; Problem of succession, polygamy as well as contentious Will among the families as the reasons why family businesses often collapsed in that part of the country.
Onyima also listed poor succession plan, lack of interests by the children as well as lack of trusted advisers among bane of family businesses in the zone while calling on businessmen to always know that businesses most important asset is its human capital.
“It is therefore, important to ensure that the skill sets of different family members are well organized and stored in a complimentary cache of knowledge. The success of family businesses will improve significantly with clear division of labour and effective coordination”, he said.
The National President of Nigeria Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, (NACCIMA), Alhaji Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, noted that the theme of the summit, Entrepreneur in the 21st Century, is not only timely and embarassing, but most brilliant initiative by the organizers, considering the monocultural nature of Nigeria’s economy.
He said the summit was also important because it offered the opportunity for indigenous new entrepreneurs to bring about a mindset change that will reshape the thinking of the country in the emerging business scene to influence and make a positive difference to change the world.
“Indeed Nnewi is the industrial hub of South East region often referred to as the Japan of Africa because of its vast potentials for global reckoning, which if properly utilized could further reposition Nnewi as an investment destination in the eyes of investing public both locally and internationally”
Governor Peter Obi, represented by the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Robert Okonkwo, said youths who attended the programme did so because they wante to succeed in life and encouraged them to start family businesses which could give them self employment if managed with perseverance.
He commended the Nnewi Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture and The Sun Publishing Limited for organizing the programme, adding that the time was apt now that the country is seriously seeking economic salvation.
Earlier, the Chairman of the occasion, Mr. Linus Ilozue, said the essence of the event was to see how business activities are going to improve in Nnewi and urged entrepreneurs to always embrace an event like this.
