Climate change: Ex-minister, experts warn of looming food crisis

… Say Africa most exposed continent to impacts of change

From FRED ITUA, ABUJA

Former minister of Environment, John Odey and former Bolivian Ambassador to the United Nations, Pablo Solon as well as leading environmental experts have raised the alarm over looming food crisis in Nigeria and Africa due to the biting effects of climate change.

The two leading environmental experts who made separate remarks yesterday in Abuja during the maiden edition of Health of Mother Earth Foundation’s event, warned that with the way and manner climate change discussion was being handled by world leaders, in the nearest future, Nigeria and Africa would be greatly affected and this would result in food crisis.

While addressing the gathering, Odey advised that Nigeria must find a way to manage its natural resources in a sustainable manner. He said: “It’s true that the temperature is rising. We must see how we can manage our natural resources in a sustainable manner. For us in the developing countries, we think that managing our resources is the key to prosperity.

“We pursue development, thinking much more about economic development and less of environment. That has been the problem. We must manage our resources in a much better form. If the professionals who sit down to make laws for this country should also deliberate on issues about environment.”

In his lecture, former Bolivian envoy to the United Nations revealed that the African continent was gradually becoming the most exposed region in the world to the impacts of climate change. He said: “Africa is becoming the most exposed region in the world to the impacts of climate change. The other part of the world that will be adversely affected is South-East Asia.

“The capability of Africa to produce food will be less as the temperature increases. There is an agreement regarding the continent that is going to pay more for the effects of climate change and that region is Africa. There are a lot of things that show how the climate change is going to impact on everything like water, food and the environment.

“Those who contribute to the less greenhouse gasses will be themost impacted by climate change. For you to adapt to climate change, you need money. But who has more resources to adapt to climate change? Those contributing more to the problem of climate change have more money to tackle its effects. Those who contribute less have no money to mitigate the effects of climate change.”
