I Want To Be Called Alaafin Of Iwo – Oluwo Sparks Royal Debate

Wednesday, 4 June 2025

The Oluwo of Iwoland in Osun State, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, has sparked traditional curiosity by declaring his desire to be referred to as the “Alaafin of Iwo.”

He made this known during a courtesy visit from the newly crowned Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade, at his palace on Tuesday.

Oba Akanbi, while expressing gratitude for the visit, emphasized the importance of unity between Oyo and Iwo, noting that the relationship between both towns would continue to thrive. In his words, “Henceforth, I will also want to be called Alaafin of Iwo and we will inform the government about it.”

The Oluwo further explained that the title of Alaafin holds great historical significance in Yorubaland, adding that it was originally used by Oramiyan, a descendant of Oduduwa.

He said, “I don’t know any other title in Yorubaland that is superior to the Alaafin. Alaafin will continue to be Alaafin because that is the title that Oramiyan adopted and I will also adopt the saying.”

He praised Oba Owoade’s humility and foresaw peace and development in Oyo under his reign.

In response, the Alaafin of Oyo thanked Oluwo for attending his coronation and said he visited to deepen the bond between both towns. He also urged other traditional rulers in Iwo to support Oba Akanbi for the continued development of the town.

Oba Abimbola Owoade was crowned as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo in April 2025, succeeding the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. His visit to Iwo marks one of his early engagements to foster unity and tradition across Yoruba communities.
