The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has strongly refuted claims linking it to the deaths of 776 individuals and significant economic setbacks across the South-East.
This denial follows a report by SBM Intelligence, which accused the group of being behind the region’s unrest and financial decline.
In a statement issued on Monday, IPOB’s spokesperson, Emma Powerful, labelled the report false, misleading, and lacking credible evidence. According to him, “Our organisation has consistently denounced violence and has not supported any form of social or economic disruption in the South-East.”
Powerful emphasised that IPOB officially suspended its Monday sit-at-home directive in 2021 and noted that its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, had publicly disassociated from any persons or factions attempting to enforce such orders independently.
“Any incident attributed to sit-at-home actions should not be automatically linked to IPOB,” the group reiterated. We do not sanction activities that inflict hardship or loss on our people.”
The group challenged SBM Intelligence to present verifiable proof and pursue their claims through legitimate legal procedures, rather than media speculation.
IPOB also questioned the timing of the report, pointing out that it was released just days before Biafra Heroes Day, an annual event commemorated on May 30 in honour of those who died during the Biafran War.
“This period is deeply significant to our members and supporters. We hope that discussions and publications around this time would reflect sensitivity and balance,” the statement read.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful advocacy for self-determination and called on the public to disregard what it described as a coordinated attempt to tarnish its image.
