Governor Mohammed Bago of Niger State has announced a major shift in the state’s transport system, aiming to replace motorcycles and tricycles with electric vehicles.
Speaking during the 2025 International Labour Day celebration in Minna on Thursday, Bago indicated that the government is partnering with Chinese investors to set up an electric vehicle assembly plant in the state.
“Niger State Government is working with some Chinese investors who will establish electric vehicle assembly plants here in Niger State. And as such, civil servants and workers will begin to have their own cars at subsidised rates so that they can own cars,” he stated.
The governor said the initiative is designed to make transport cleaner, cheaper, and more accessible especially for workers. He also mentioned plans to rebuild key roads to support the transition.
Beyond transportation, Bago pledged to construct 10,000 housing units for workers, revamp water supply systems, and provide free internet in schools and public offices.
He assured workers of continued investment in their welfare and a commitment to building a modern, tech-friendly Niger State.
