In a bold step to address the growing threats of abduction and insecurity in educational institutions, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, on Tuesday, launched the School Protection Squad (SPS) in Nasarawa State under the Safe School Initiative.
This intervention is aimed at shielding students, staff, and their learning environments from criminal attacks, particularly kidnappings.
Represented by AIG Zone 4, Zacharia Fera, the IGP emphasized that: “Our schools are not just sanctuaries of knowledge but also nurturing grounds for our future leadership… Therefore, they must be protected against all possible threats.”
The initiative will involve training police officers under the SPS to act swiftly in cases of emergency, boost school security, and foster a safer learning environment.
Governor Abdullahi Sule, who attended the launch with his deputy, hailed the effort as timely, noting it addresses real concerns about safety in both public and private schools. He called on stakeholders to report suspicious movements to the authorities promptly.

The Commissioner of Police in charge of the School Protection Squad, CP Abayomi Shogunle, also noted that the rising trend of school attacks has contributed to a growing number of out-of-school children.
He said the SPS is part of a national plan to strengthen school security and reduce education-related disruptions.
Nasarawa has been selected as one of the pilot states, with a dedicated hotline (08077357777) provided for emergencies.
The initiative will also focus on training educators and administrators in safety protocols, while deploying modern surveillance tools to detect threats proactively.
This marks a significant step by the Nigeria Police Force towards ensuring that schools, as centers of learning and hope, are not overrun by fear.
