Former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF), Abubakar Malami, has sharply criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) for prioritizing President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid over tackling Nigeria’s urgent challenges, including insecurity and economic hardship.
Malami made the remarks during a political consultative meeting organized by the National Political Consultative Group (North) in Abuja on Tuesday.
The event brought together prominent opposition figures such as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, and former Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi.
Condemning the APC’s recent national summit, Malami described it as a missed opportunity to address the country’s worsening socio-economic conditions.
“Just a few days ago, the ruling party held its national summit and instead of addressing the serious issues of insecurity, economic hardship, and rising poverty, it chose to focus on politics, endorsing President Bola Tinubu as the sole candidate for the 2027 election that is still two years away,” he said.
The May 22 summit saw the Progressive Governors Forum publicly declare support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition, a move that has drawn criticism both within and outside the party.
Malami, who served as AGF from 2015 to 2023 under the Buhari administration, is part of a growing faction within the APC particularly from the former Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) bloc that is expressing dissatisfaction with the party’s current direction.
A communique signed by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, called for northern unity in political decision making and urged the formation of a political platform to safeguard the region’s interests.
It also condemned the impunity of elected officials endorsing themselves or others without consulting their constituents, calling for sanctions to deter such actions.
