Senate Moves To Legalize State Police Amid Rising Insecurity – Bamidele

Monday, 21 April 2025

Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has disclosed that lawmakers are working on legislation to allow states to establish their own police forces, in response to Nigeria’s deepening security crisis.

This development comes amidst increasing pressure on the federal government to decentralize policing and give states more authority in managing internal security.

Bamidele, in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, explained that the move is part of wider efforts to combat violence, kidnappings, and criminal activity that have plagued states like Benue, Plateau, and Borno.

The proposal for state police, which has long been a subject of national debate, is gaining renewed traction following fresh waves of attacks in these areas.

Many Nigerians, including prominent figures like former Defence Minister Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (retd.), have grown increasingly vocal about the need for citizens to seek alternative means of protection.

Bamidele, however, remains hopeful that the legislative changes underway will restore peace and security.

“The recent killings in Benue and Plateau States outrightly negate the virtues of peace and love that Jesus Christ taught during His days,” Bamidele said.

The Senate Leader also called for national unity and responsible dialogue, urging political and religious leaders to avoid divisive rhetoric.

He reaffirmed the commitment of the 10th National Assembly to push forward the state police framework as a means to foster peace, accountability, and localized law enforcement.

Bamidele emphasised that collaboration between security agencies and stakeholders is essential in tracking the masterminds behind these violent incidents. He urged all Nigerians to work together in building a safer and more united country.
