Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, and several key stakeholders from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) have officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement came after a high-level meeting on Wednesday at the Government House in Asaba on Wednesday.
Delta State Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Charles Aniagwu, explained that the decision was made after careful consultations, with the aim of aligning with a political platform that would better serve the state’s development goals and the interests of its people.
“For some time now, the media has been speculating about the political direction of Delta State,” Aniagwu said.
“Our Governor and leaders have been carrying out wide consultations, and after careful deliberations, we reached a unanimous decision. The political temperature has changed — the taste of the palm wine, so to speak, has changed and we must adjust our drinking pattern accordingly.”
He added that this move was intended to ensure that Delta State continues on a path of development, security, and progress, asserting that staying in the PDP would hinder this progress.
Former Senator for Delta South and pioneer PDP Chairman in the state, Senator James Manager, also reflected on the decision, saying it was an emotional moment for him, having been with the PDP from its inception.
However, he emphasiaed that the decision was necessary due to internal issues within the PDP. “When a ship is sinking, you don’t stay onboard out of sentiment,” he stated.
This defection represents a significant change in Delta State’s political landscape and sets the stage for a new era as the state prepares for the 2027 general elections.
