“Mosquito Can’t Beat A Lion” — Portable Dares Speed Darlington Ahead Of Celebrity Bout

Friday, 18 April 2025

Controversial singer Habeeb Okikiola, known as Portable, and his rival Darlington Okoye, aka Speed Darlington, were involved in heated verbal exchanges on Thursday.

The duo have promised a fierce confrontation at the ‘Chaos In The Ring’ boxing event, set to take place on Friday at the Balmoral Convention Centre in Lagos.

The weigh-ins for all the other boxers went smoothly, with only a few taunts and shoves, until the celebrities took their turn.

During their weigh-ins, the two musicians had a brief altercation and had to be separated by bouncers. Following the incident, Portable demonstrated his boxing skills through shadow boxing.

“You better say you’re not fighting again. I just came out of prison, I’m a former prisoner, and they’ve cut my hair. It’s all the bad side of my life that they cut away. I have already won this fight,” Portable taunted his opponent.

The “Zazuu” crooner, who was recently released after Fuji star Saheed Osupa dropped a cyberstalking case against him, proudly bragged about his fighting skills.

“I am a street fighter, and they (Balmoral) paid me money to beat you, so I will beat you. I am sorry in advance. If you think it is because I just left prison, forget that, I will beat you. You are a mosquito, and a mosquito can’t beat a lion,” he said.

This follows statements he made weeks ago, where he expressed interest in facing former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua for N100m, rather than Speed Darlington, whom he regarded as an “unworthy opponent.”

Speed Darlington hit back just as fiercely, stating, “You can’t beat me, let’s go now! Nothing can happen. It is here that they will wipe your blood, just show up tomorrow. I will take your belt home with me.

“I will bring the coffin for you and bury you in it after I beat you. You can’t compare Charles to me, he is a father and he is old, no worry.”

The ongoing feud between the two artists reportedly intensified when Speed Darlington offered Portable N500,000 to perform at his event, a gesture that Portable found insulting.

Rafiu Ladipo, Chairman of the Nigerian Boxing Board of Control, who attended the weigh-in, stressed the significance of following proper medical procedures before professional boxing matches.

Ladipo made this remark in reference to the death of boxer Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju in Ghana last month, with the NBBofC revealing that he had not undergone medicals in Accra.

“There are two doctors here doing the medicals for all these boxers before the fight tomorrow. This is what they should have done in Ghana, so we are saying it again that 24 hours before every professional boxing fight, all boxers should have medicals and weigh-in,” Ladipo stated.

Friday’s ‘Chaos In The Ring’ event, put together by Game Rush and Balmoral Promotions, comes on the heels of their successful December 2024 tournament and the debut of Friday Fight Night in February 2025. The action-packed boxing event will showcase top fighters from six countries: Ghana, Tanzania, Egypt, Italy, the UK, and Nigeria.

Nigerian boxing star Basit “Jokerboy” Adebayo is set to compete for the WBO Youth International lightweight title against Tanzanian opponent Suleiman Sheha during the event.

In December 2023, Portable triumphed over Nollywood actor Charles Okocha in a celebrity boxing match after four intense rounds at Landmark Beach, Victoria Island, Lagos. The bout served as a resolution to their dispute, which stemmed from Portable’s allegations of a N40 million contract scam.

With Portable and Speed Darlington both cleared through medicals and weigh-ins at the Balmoral Event Centre, fans can expect a fiery celebrity showdown that’s sure to grab headlines.
