Mahmood Yakubu Remains INEC Chairman – Presidency Insists

President Bola Tinubu’s led administration has debunked viral report claiming that its has terminated the appointment of Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

INFORMATION NIGERIA learnt that earlier on Monday, some purported reports alleged that Yakubu had been removed from office and replaced with a one Professor Bashiru Olamilekan.

Reacting to the rumor, Senior Special Adviser to the President on Digital and New Media, O’tega Ogra, via his X page, described the news as false and urged Nigerians to disregard it.

He emphasised that any such announcement would be disclosed from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation or another official communication channel.

He said: “Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman.

“Any such announcement will come from the SGF’s office or any other official source.”

Also reacting to the rumour, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, dismissed the report and urged the public to disregard it entirely.

He said: “The story trending across media platforms to the effect that Mr. President Bola Tinubu has either sacked the INEC chairman or has replaced the INEC chairman is not true and should be discountenanced.

“Decisions and/or official acts of Mr. President are communicated through official channels and not the rumor mill.”

The tenure of Professor Yakubu, who was reappointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari on October 27, 2020, for a second five-year term, is due to conclude later this year.
