Thursday, 27 February 2025

Michelle Trachtenberg, an American actress who rose to prominence as a child in the 1990s and 2000s, has passed away at the age of 39.

Police in Manhattan said they responded to an emergency call on Wednesday morning, and found Trachtenberg “unconscious and unresponsive”. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The American actress was widely recognised for her role as Dawn Summers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s younger sister. She later portrayed the manipulative socialite Georgina Sparks in Gossip Girl, which aired from 2007 to 2012, marking her transition to adult roles.

Trachtenberg’s film debut was in Harriet the Spy (1996), and she also appeared in various Nickelodeon productions.

Her family’s representatives have confirmed her passing through a statement.

“It is with great sadness to confirm that Michelle Trachtenberg has passed away. The family requests privacy for their loss,” it said.

Authorities have stated that her death is not being considered suspicious.

“Criminality is not suspected. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing,” the NYPD said in a statement.

Trachtenberg began her acting career at the age of nine on the Nickelodeon series The Adventures of Pete & Pete.

In the early 2000s, she received multiple acting nominations, including a Daytime Emmy Award, for her role in Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Trachtenberg made her first appearance in Gossip Girl in 2008 and later reprised her role for two episodes in the 2023 reboot on HBO Max.

Her most recent significant acting role was in 2021, where she hosted the true-crime docuseries Meet, Marry, Murder on the digital streaming platform Tubi.
