“Irresponsible Protests Started With #EndSARS In 2020” – Aide Bwala

Thursday, 13 February 2025

Daniel Bwala
Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Policy Communication, has sparked controversy by describing the 2020 #EndSARS protests as the beginning of “irresponsible protesting” in Nigeria.

In an interview with News Central on Wednesday, Bwala claimed that previous protests in Nigeria were organized, unlike the #EndSARS movement.

He emphasized that the government cannot sit back and allow law and order to be disrupted.

“You want to shut down law and order in the country? There is no police anywhere in the world that will close their eyes to that fact.

“EndSARS was the beginning and the foundation of irresponsible protesting. Before EndSARS, all the protests that we had in the country were organised. That’s why they were called organised protests,” Bwala said.

Bwala denied allegations that security forces shot protesters, instead attributing the violence to “misadventures by law enforcement.”

He also referenced the investigation panel set up to probe the incidents.

“The government didn’t shoot down the protesters. There were misadventures by law enforcement and I must admit. And that’s why a panel was formed to investigate, and it released its findings,” Bwala explained.

The #EndSARS protests, which began in October 2020, were a response to years of alleged police brutality, extortion, and killings by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

The movement quickly gained momentum, with widespread demonstrations across major Nigerian cities.
