Nasir El-Rufai, the former Governor of Kaduna State, has clarified that his support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2023 election bid was not motivated by personal interests or expectations of favors in return.
El-Rufai, who was a key figure in the Northern Governors’ push for a Southern president, stated that his actions were driven by his commitment to his party, country, and faith.
This stance was instrumental in paving the way for Tinubu’s emergence as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate.

Tinubu went on to win the presidential election, defeating Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP).
However, El-Rufai has recently been critical of the Tinubu administration and the APC, leading to public exchanges with some of the President’s aides.
In a post via X on Monday, El-Rufai noted, “We did what we did for God, country, and party, expecting nothing in return. What is unfolding is merely another life experience and part of human nature. We have moved on, but their conscience won’t let them sleep well.”
El-Rufai’s comments suggest that he has distanced himself from the Tinubu administration and is no longer expecting any favors or rewards for his support during the election.
