Teni Apata, a Nigerian singer and songwriter, and her sister Teju recently honoured the memory of their late father, Brigadier-General Simeon Apata, as they marked the 30th anniversary of his tragic assassination.
Teni shared a heartfelt tribute on Instagram on Wednesday, referring to her father as a hero and an icon.
She wrote, “On this day, Nigeria stood still! My hero was taken from us. Keep resting gallant soldier, Apata!!!. My father, an icon, philanthropist, one of a kind. Your legacy will live forever.”
Teju also posted a moving message, revealing painful details of her father’s murder, including the disturbing use of a two-week-old baby as bait.
She reflected on the profound impact his loss had on their family, especially the absence of photographs with him.
Their older sister Niniola offered comforting words, encouraging Teju to recognise their father’s presence in herself.
Brigadier-General Simeon Apata, a respected military officer, was known for his efforts in combating armed robbery.
His enduring legacy includes the Apata Memorial Schools, which continue to provide education for many.
Teju wrote, “30 years ago you were assassinated in your home in front of your wife and children. In front of your 2 weeks old baby used as bait.. I never got a chance to take a picture with you. But when I spoke to my older sister @officialniniola yesterday said, look in the mirror, every time you see yourself you see him. That one hit deep. Rest in peace Simeon Olaosebikan Apata.”
