“I Expected Fubara To Extend An Olive Branch” – Okocha Slams Governor Over Budget Presentation

Friday, 3 January 2025

Tony Okocha
The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Tony Okocha, has criticized Governor Siminalayi Fubara for presenting the 2025 budget to a faction of the State House of Assembly.

Okocha accused Fubara of fuelling division in the state, which may lead to the worst political crisis Rivers has ever experienced.

He expressed his disappointment in a statement on Thursday, saying, “I expected the governor to use the new year to extend an olive branch and promote peace, but instead, he continues to fuel the flames of division.”

Okocha also questioned Fubara’s decision, stating, “It is unimaginable and unthinkable that a Governor with such a rich background in finance and governance would choose to sidestep legal processes.”

The APC chairman emphasized that the Assembly has 30 functional members, yet the budget was presented in a setting that courts have described as illegitimate.

He noted, “The Court of Appeal, in their various judgements on issues like these, have touched on these issues, and I refer to them as a forum, maybe a forum of friends but certainly not legislators.”

Okocha’s criticism comes after Fubara presented a N1.1 trillion budget to the Victor Oko-Jumbo-led House of Assembly in December.

The move has sparked controversy, with many questioning the legitimacy of the presentation.
