In a significant crackdown on international crime, Nigerian security operatives have arrested 10 individuals on Interpol’s watch list while attempting to enter the country.

This achievement was disclosed by Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, Minister of Interior, during the inauguration of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) Technology Innovation Complex in Abuja.

According to Tunji-Ojo, “In the last couple of days, there were 10 people who were on the INTERPOL and immigration wanted list who were apprehended in one week.”

He emphasized that these arrests demonstrate Nigeria’s commitment to combating crime, stating, “Before now, those people would have entered Nigeria, causing terror. But we have now told them that under the new leadership, Nigeria is a no-go area for any criminal element.”

The newly launched NIS Technology Innovation Complex features cutting-edge facilities, including a command and control center, data centers, and a solar power plant.

These innovations aim to enhance border security, facilitate easy travel, and promote sustainability.

As Tunji-Ojo noted, “We decided to do an end-to-end solution. One that has an energy solution to power this facility. The 0.5KW solar power plant is 100 percent ready here, and it has been connected to the facility to power it.”

The Minister also highlighted the human element in this effort, mentioning that 250 officers have been trained to man the facilities.

With the new technology and trained personnel in place, Nigeria expects to save over N300 million annually. Additionally, the country has introduced an ECOWAS travel document and automated visa regime with 48-hour approval.
