Thursday, 21 November 2024

Simon Ekpa
Simon Ekpa, a Finnish-Nigerian separatist leader and self-proclaimed Prime Minister of the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile, has been arrested in Finland.

He was remanded alongside four others on suspicion of terror-related offenses.

Ekpa was remanded in custody by the Päijät-Häme District Court for allegedly inciting crime with terrorist intent.

According to the Finnish Central Criminal Police, Ekpa is the main suspect, detained “on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.”

The four others were arrested for “financing a terrorist crime.” The police statement revealed that claims will be heard in court today, November 21.

The investigation centers on Ekpa, a Finnish citizen of Nigerian background, born in the 1980s, suspected of promoting violence against civilians and authorities in South-Eastern Nigeria through his social media channels, said Crime Commissioner, Otto Hiltunen.

“The man has carried out this activity, among other things, on his social media channels,” Hiltunen stated.

The four other suspects are accused of financing Ekpa’s activities. All five suspects were arrested earlier this week, with international cooperation playing a significant role in the preliminary investigation.

Information Nigeria reports that development marks a significant turn in the ongoing tensions surrounding the Biafra separatist movement.

Ekpa’s arrest is likely to have far-reaching implications for the region.
