Friday, 22 November 2024

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Ogun State Command, has arrested eight teenagers in Ijebu-Mushin, Ijebu East Local Government Area, Ogun State.

The teenagers were taken into custody on charges of conspiracy, sexual abuse, and illicit sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old girl.

The individuals under suspicion are Matthew Omotayo, 17, Mojeeb Solomon, 16, Olamilekan Adefuye, 18, Damilola Ismail, 19, Emmanuel George, 17, Aborisade Ayomide, 17, Paul Chukwuchebe, 19, and Lateef Adeoye, 16.

The arrest was detailed in a statement by Dyke Ogbonnaya, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, on Thursday.

Ogbonnaya who said the incident happened on Friday, explained that the suspects allegedly assaulted and gang-raped the minor while permanently taping the incident for possible blackmail.

He said the crime violated sections 32 and 33 of Ogun State’s Child Rights Law 2006.

He stated that the suspects, who admitted to being students of St. Anthony Grammar School in Esure, Ijebu-Mushin, Ijebu East Local Government Area, took the teenager without her consent to a private room where they violently raped her and recorded the incident on video.

He said, ” According to the teenager, she was sexually abused the first time and was recorded and the alleged suspects threatened to upload the video on social media if she did not allow them to have her again which she also consented to until she resolved to report the matter to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Divisional Office at Ijebu-Mushin, Ogun State.”

Ogbonnaya stated that based on the information, two of the suspects were apprehended, which led to the tracking and arrest of the other members of the gang.

He stated that after obtaining the teenager’s mother’s approval, she was made to undergo a medical procedure at the Sexual Assault Referral Centre, SARC, at the Olabisi Onabajo University Teaching Hospital in Sagamu.

The spokesperson revealed that the investigation’s findings led to the State Command’s legal officer requesting a remand order through the magistrate court in Ijebu-Mushin, Ogun State.

The Magistrate approved the request of the Civil Defence legal officer to hold the suspects in custody for 60 days while awaiting advice from the Department of Public Prosecution. The case was then adjourned until January 20, 2025.

Meanwhile, Remilekun Omolade Ekundayo, the State Commandant, asserted that the Corps will take a strong stance against any abuse of a girl child, regardless of whether it is perpetrated by peers, caregivers, guardians, or parents.

She emphasised that anyone found guilty of such heinous acts will face serious consequences under the law.
