The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) has confirmed the release of its founder, Fisayo Soyombo, from detention by the Nigerian Army.
Soyombo was arrested and detained for three days by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers state.
The Nigerian Army claimed that Soyombo was arrested at an illegal oil bunkering site.
However, FIJ, on Friday, acknowledged the Army’s “deliberate mischaracterisation” of the situation, stating that they will address the statement appropriately.
In a statement via X, FIJ said, “We can confirm that our founder @fisayosoyombo has now been released by @HQNigerianArmy, following the intense media campaign you all mounted.”
The organization expressed concern over Soyombo’s safety, given the extensive information sharing with the Army on his fieldwork during detention.
“We are assessing the situation and hoping that his safety will not be jeopardised after release,” FIJ said.
