Reps Ask INEC To Review Federal Constituencies

Ahead of 2023 General election in Nigeria, the Federal House of Representatives asked Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to invoke the provision of section 71 (b) of the Nigerian constitution which provides for the review of the division of states of the federation into federal constituencies.

The agreement was passed by the lower chamber on Wednesday sequel to the adoption of motion earlier raised on matter of urgent national importance on the ‘Review Of The Division Of States Of The Federation Into Federal Constituencies’.

The motion was sponsored by the House Minority Leader, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu.

Hon. Elumelu expressed displeasure over the inability of the electoral umpire to use its power as provided in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He faulted the commission for failing to review the division of states into Federal Constituencies for 22 years the country returned to Democracy against the 10 years provided by Nigeria constitution for delineation by the electoral commission.

Members of the green chamber in the National Assembly called on the electoral commission to further delineate Federal constituencies covering local government areas in the six geopolitical zones in the country, Nigeria and ensure that a Federal Constituency do not fall under more than one state.

Hon. Ndudi Elumelu while presenting his motion said, “Section 71(b) of the 1999 constitution as amended in 2011 empowers INEC to divide the Federal constituencies for the purpose of elections into the House of Representatives.”

The House directed the Committee on electoral matters to meet the leadership of INEC and report back in six weeks.
