The Federal Government of Nigeria has revealed that the country records about 2.5million tonnes of deficit in fish production yearly.
At a Stockfish seminar organized by the Norwegian Seafood Council in Lagos, the Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Sabo Nanono, said the shortfall is likely to affect protein consumption by citizens if the gap is not closed immediately.

The Minister who was represented by the Director of Fishery and Aquaculture Department, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Ime Umo said that the country’s fish production stand at about 1.123m metric tonnes yearly.
The Minister said annual consumption by citizens stand at 3.6m metric tonnes adding that the total fish production including those imported into the country is still not sufficient.
