The Senate at Wednesday’s plenary threw out a bill aimed at compelling female NYSC youth corps members to wear skirts instead of trousers during their service year.
Senator Emmanuel Bwacha (PDP/Taraba South) who sponsored the bill later addressed Senate Correspondents where he said it was the outcome of complaints by his constituents and some Nigerians who believe that compulsorily asking females to wear trousers during the service year is against their faith or culture.
The National Youth Service Corps is a compulsory one year program for all Nigerian university and polytechnic graduates and all females are expected to wear trousers due to rigorous training exercises that are fashioned after military recruit trainings.
