fcta_477085444It has been revealed that Fulani mercenaries from Cameroon and other parts of the country including Katsina State have volunteered to join forces with their counterparts in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, to fight native Gbagis following the recent clash between them over grazing right.

The clash, which broke out at Gwako in Gwagwalada area council left no fewer than two persons dead and others injured. About 1, 500 persons were said to have been displaced and temporarily sheltered at the permanent site of the University of Abuja after their over 10 settlements were destroyed.

The Commissioner of Police for FCT, Ade Shinaba, confirmed that the mercenaries actually made series of calls and mobilised to join forces with Fulanis in Abuja to unleash mayhem on the Gbagis. He made this known while speaking when the investigation committee looking into the conflict submitted its report to the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed.

He said, “during the series of meetings by the committee set up by the FCT Minister to look into the remote causes of the bloody clash between the Fulanis and the Gbagis, we received calls from mercenaries from Cameroon, Katsina, Edo and some northern states, who were on standby to join forces with Fulanis in FCT and start another round of war… But for the wise response of Fulani elders who told them that the administration was on top of the issue, we would have been singing another song.

“We were able to avert that mayhem amicably and we hope that both the Fulanis and Gbagis will continue to live together in peace.” The FCT Police boss also disclosed that 25 suspects have so far been arrested in connection with the crisis.

inecfireA fire incident was recorded at the head office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Monday morning. The fire affected the office of the Director of Voter Registry at the Information, Communication and Technology (ICT) section of the Commission.

According to the Director of Public Affairs of INEC Emmanuel Umenger, who briefed newsmen in Abuja on the incident, the fire began and ended at the affected office. He, however, allayed any fear, saying that “there should be no cause for worry because the fire did not affect the database containing information about the voter registration.”

He continues: “as you have seen, the fire incident began and only ended in the office of the Director of Voter Registry. Due to the prompt effort of staff on the ground who alerted the relevant agencies, the fire was put out before it could spread to other places and luckily, the voter registration data base was not affected and the saver was saved because the fire did not even get to that section of the building.”

He added that “the Commission is poised as ever to grant Nigerians credible, free and fair elections at all times and this little incident will not in any way stop that, I must assure you.” It was gathered that the fire had started at about 9.30 a.m. when most of the staff were already on duty; however, the fire was brought under control by combined effort of seven fire fighting trucks, including four trucks from the Federal Fire Service, two from the FCT fire service and one from the Nigerian Air Force.

Also, the Director of ICT, Engineer Chidi Nwafor who had earlier conducted the newsmen round the affected office said all that was lost were personal effects of the staff, some files and computers.

Inspector-General-of-Police-Mohammed-Abubakar-360x225A female officer in the Nigerian police force was on Monday slaughtered by men suspected to be members of the Boko Haram sect in Jiddari Polo area of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

According to a resident of the area, people are currently relocating because of the security situation. The source said “it was shocking, that these people can attack a woman. I think the situation in Maiduguri is not getting any better since there is no day without one sad news or the other. I pray that government would stop playing politics with this insecurity situation and bring the situation to an end.”

Meanwhile, efforts to get police confirmation did not yield result as the mobile lines of both the Borno State Commissioner of Police, Yuguda Abdullahi and the state Police Public Relations Officer, Gideon Jibril were not going through.
