On this day, December 31, in 1983, Nigeria’s first executive president, Shehu Shagari, was removed from power by the Nigerian armed forces through a military coup that paved the way for Major General Muhammadu Buhari to be installed as the country’s head of state.
Buhari was General Officer Commanding, Third Armoured Division, Jos at the time. He was overthrown two years later in a coup led by General Ibrahim Babangida.
He was detained for about three years by the new government in a small Bungalow in Benin. He was later released in 1988 after his mother’s death.
