Why we arrested Deji Adeyanju – Police

The police has come under severe criticisms, after it arrested human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, leading a protest, demanding that police stay neutral in the 2019 general elections.

Adeyanju was arrested on Wednesday, and arraigned in court on allegations of criminal defamation and breach of public peace.

Many prominent Nigerians have taken yo social media, to demand for the unconditional release of Deji, as they argue that Nigeria may be shifting towards a dictatorial government – Following these kinds of arrests.

However, reacting to the arrest of Adeyanju and two others, police said they were picked up for Criminal Conspiracy, Joint Act, Defamation of Character, Public Nuisance, Disobedience to Order Duly Promulgated by Public Servant, Disturbance of Public Peace, Inciting Public Disturbance, Threat to Public Security.

Police noted that Adeyanju and two (2) others, who were arrested and arraigned in a court of competent jurisdiction yesterday,  was to ensure that no individual or group, cause disturbance of public peace and safety anywhere in the Country.
